The latest step in the company’s evolution is the fulfilment of a multi-million dollar expansion programme. PRODUCTION W ith its origins stemming back to a family fish and chip shop in Port Chalmers, Kaan’s Catering Supplies Ltd has evolved as a leading wholesale suppli- er of quality food and food related products to a diverse range of commercial kitchens in the South. Proudly 100% New Zealand owned and operated, Kaans Catering Supplies is a family focused operation, employing over 170 staff in Dunedin and operating from Bluff through to Christchurch. The latest step in the company’s evolu- tion is the fulfilment of a multi-million dollar expansion programme that has increased its capacity by 40% and ability to grow along with creating significant improvements to opera- tional efficiency. “We had outgrown our old sites and we needed to expand,” says Managing Director Lindsay Kaan. “We had been looking for a couple of years when Fonterra sites at numbers 6, 11 and 17 Kitchener Street came available a short distance from our existing location.” Spending close to $15 million on the development, existing chillers and freezers have been modernised and a new dry store has been built along with a large temperature controlled area where trucks drive in and out for loading and unloading. “We now have chillers at different temper- atures for different types of products, so the new facilities have moved us forward to where we need to be nowadays. “When you go into the buildings it’s like entering a modern supermarket with polished concrete floors that are scrubbed every night.” Finally moving into the new premises in October last year, Lindsay says all the staff had been looking forward to the new and up to date warehouse. “We put a big emphasis on the staff facili- ties.
