A new Architecture and Design Library has recently opened in Wanaka, an in- spired effort by local interior designers Penny Calder and Verity Lawrence. The library boasts a creative space for industry professionals, a professional envi- ronment for local and out of town architects, interior designers, and trades people to work, procure samples, host meetings with clients and suppliers, receive design education, and attend product launches. Having been in the design industry for more than 10 years, Penny and Verity had both found working from home and sourcing sam- pling presented its own challenges. “Despite the building boom, Central Otago does not have the same access to sampling that larger regional centres have,” Verity says. “We were also aware that within Wanaka and Queenstown there are many others in the same predicament.” After Penny and Verity first met in Decem- ber 2019, the concept of the Architecture + Design Library was formed and then expand- ed to provide even more facilities for profes- sionals within the design and construction industry. In September 2020 Penny and Verity took on two tenancies at 2A Frederick Street and have spent the past few months fully renovat- ing each one. A shared studio was opened in October offering eight desks and a private meeting room. Shortly after the sample library was opened and continues to grow. In renovating the property, Penny and Verity have taken the opportunity to use as many of the products found in the library as possible. Due to the support and interest received, a third tenancy within the property was added to the business in November. This gave the Architecture + Design Library the opportunity to offer private offices and a second meeting space, increase its library and have somewhere to host events. The exhibi- tion space is also available for companies to hire as a pop up showroom and to launch new products. Creating a space where the design com- munity can come together to be inspired and collaborate has always been at the forefront of Penny and Verity’s vision. They are already seeing these collabora- tions developing between members working within the studio, and the benefit of having access to an extensive sample library.
