BUILDING F ew building firms could match the skills and experience offered by powerhouse husband and wife team Angus and Laura Chisholm at Christchurch-based Angus Chisholm Builders Ltd. Angus is a Registered Master Builder and Licensed Building Practitioner whose exper- tise has been honed over a 17 year building career, while Laura has a degree in Civil Engineering and is very experienced in design/ construction, project engineering and project management. Together they offer a complete residential build package, tailored to the client and with a strong emphasis on quality. Angus Chisholm Builders Ltd has a proven track record in Christchurch and surround- ing areas and the capability to undertake all forms of building work from new architectural homes through to renovations, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, decks, sheds and hard landscaping. Over the years, the couple have worked hard to support the local business community by developing close working relationships with trusted local suppliers and subcontractors in their area. Angus Chisholm Builders is consciously adapting to today’s eco-aware market by offering design and build options informed by passive home principles. This approach offers higher levels of comfort, health and energy efficiency than standard homes built to code. Angus and Laura are currently building a spacious new home for themselves and their four young children in Prebbleton to provide an exemplar of their services – showcasing their expertise in concrete panelling and options for bathrooms/kitchens - and also what can be achieved by incorporating passive design principles into a contemporary home. On track for completion later this year, it will include their company office and will serve as a display platform for prospective home owners, (with visits by appointment and via a monthly open home). With a fully insulated thermal envelope, their highly energy efficient home will include recessed windows, internal- ly contained services, a home heat recovery ventilation system and roof-top solar panels. With in-slab heating, the concrete slab of the home will itself function as a kind of battery to maintain the home at a comfortable year- round temperature. “We’ve become increasingly aware our- selves that the existing building code in New Zealand sets a fairly low standard for things like heating and insulation,” says Laura. “The passive design and build ethos makes a lot of sense to us because it does lead to a better lifestyle with family homes that are healthier and warmer.” They are excited by the growing range of new and better building products now being made in New Zealand that support this ap- proach. Whether it’s a new build, renovation or extension, they say passive techniques can significantly boost quality and long term performance. “We want to show people what they can achieve with their budget and how to maxim- ise their most important asset,” says Angus.
