BUILDING N ot one for the mainstream build, Christchurch residential design and build firm JD Homes is sought for its specialisation in individuality. After 14 years in business, Jesse and Marcel- la De Wys have built a hard-earned reputation for crafting beautiful, high quality homes with a distinctive style. “All the years of practising our craft mean that we can help our clients to create a per- sonalised home that matches their lifestyle,” Jesse says. “We work together with our clients from design through to completion to make sure we are realising their vision every step of the way.” Based at West Melton, JD Homes has a show home available to view by appointment. Prospective clients will be accompanied on their show home tour by Jesse or Marcella, where they can provide professional advice on that vital early stage of the planning process. “I think the main thing most people want from a show home tour is sound advice. “There are so many people out there they can talk to, and so much information on the internet, that people can get a bit muddled up. We can help people to narrow down what they’re after a bit more.” The choice of building materials is vast for a new home. Jesse likes to have a nice, solid, timeless classical cladding to form the back- bone of the house, then to dress it up with breaks of other cladding that is eye-catching or new to the market. He says there is a current drive for natural and honest claddings, now that 10 years in to the trend for using cedar, it is becoming apparent to many how much maintenance it requires. As regular hill builders, JD Homes often uses cross laminated flooring products. “When you’re building on the hills, it costs a lot of money to get out of the ground. This is an efficient system to get out of the ground, it’s so fast and so strong, and it eliminates the additional cost of building retaining walls.” JD Homes is immensely proud of a recent design and build project at West Melton. “Our clients came to us with a parcel of land and involved us from the very first minute, from geotech advice right through the last blade of grass being sown,” Jesse says. Bold standing seam iron cladding creates a streamlined look while also earthing the home to the ground. The cladding wraps up the walls, over the roof, then down again. A weathered-style cedar cladding mixed with white mortar schist softens the brand new build and bonds well with the detailed natural landscape design that ties the whole property together. Inside the home, a simple palette of honed concrete floors with birchwood plywood sof- tens and enhances the detailing in the relax- ing sunroom. Nice touches of black soft touch joinery throughout and some feature tiling ties the interiors together wonderfully well, and creates a very inviting atmosphere. Jesse says the outcome of this project has been very rewarding, with a substantial home which fits the client’s brief to a tee, and is a rather strong statement of what JD Homes produces.
