T T to page 108 BUILDING In 2021 Brett and Anna Johnston decided the time was right to take their professional lives to the next level and bought the Dunedin franchise of Trident Homes, a decision Brett says he has never regretted. Trident Homes is a trusted and recognised brand with a huge number of satisfied clients across the country. Since 2012, the franchise network has been steadily growing, covering several major regions in New Zealand. The group buying power, along with systems and processes, gives the franchise owners a competitive edge. “I had owned and operated my own building business in Dunedin for ten years, and saw an opportunity to become part of a professional franchise network, offering customers the advantage of a fixed price contract,’ says Brett. “I’m loving being involved with Trident, because of the broad business focus that includes marketing, working through the plans with our clients, gaining Council consent and then turning the clients’ dreams into reality. “We also had to build a team around us to get the work done — we now have a team of trusted contractors who we work with all the time building the homes.” Brett acknowledges that while delivering on time and to budget are clearly important, nothing surpasses building solid and trusted relationships with the client, and that often translates to repeat business and referrals. “I’ve been building since I was sixteen, and my building background is a distinct advantage when working with clients and our contractor workforce. “It means that I have a clear understanding about what is being built, and can make suggestions and recommendations to help the client. It also means that problems can be identified before they even start, or we have the ability to quickly resolve issues based on real construction experience. “We can eco-engineer a home design right from the very beginning, rather people spending time and money on a design and realising that their budget doesn’t allow for the build.” Brett’s hands-on practical experience is complemented with Anna’s sales, business and financial experience, making the perfect partnership that is supported by their team. “We have two construction managers who look after the day-to-day running of the projects and liaise directly with the clients. We like having the clients visit the build site quite regularly so that there’s the opportunity to tweak things like window or door placements. “We have two estimators, one who looks after the Kainaga Ora contracts and the other residential projects, and we have an office manager and Anna looks after the sales consultancy.” With its sales office based in Dunedin, Brett and his team have been building a wide range of homes from Oamaru right through to Clutha.
