REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Established by Sam Summerton in 2019 Smart Project Management Limited grew out of his extensive experience which began with a building apprenticeship in the early 2000’s. His on-the-tools training took him through the ranks from carpenter to leading hand, supervisor, construction manager, and project manager. Sam has completed a Bachelor of Applied Management majoring in Project Management and has certificates in both workplace health and safety and leadership. This has created an understanding of both the practical and theory of construction enabling Sam to understand all stages of the construction process from concept to delivery. Smart Project Management spent time in New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, on large-scale construction and infrastructure projects. The global pandemic along with his marriage to Tess who is also involved in the business brought a change in direction with the company now focusing solely on New Zealand. Sam and Tess live in Canterbury and have two sons, five-year-old William and George who will be two in March. The foundation of Smart Project Management is open and honest communication, something that Sam has understood the value of since early in his career. “I have worked on a lot of projects from major to minor and the success is not the size of the budget it is the relationship between all parties – client, design team, construction team” Sam says. Being 100% Ngai Tahu owned and operated Sam ensures that cultural integration is part and parcel of the work done by Smart Project Management, not something tacked on at the end. Major projects underway include the Pounamu Pathway. “Mawhera in Greymouth is a $10million Experience Centre fitted out by Weta Workshop telling the Maori stories of the West Coast with the European history interwoven into it. Westport, Hokitika and Haast are still to come,” says Sam. With collaboration to the fore, Smart Project Management worked closely with various construction professionals: designers RM Design, structural engineers EngCo, Quantity Surveyors Kingstons; along with Greymouth construction company Tony Wilkins Builders, to ensure the delivery on time and on budget of this world-class building that will stand the test of time. Sam says that the choice of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) and Mass Timber structural bracing for the building satisfies several criteria simultaneously. “They are earthquake resilient, and sourced and manufactured in regional New Zealand which helps the project satisfy the requirements of the Provincial Growth Fund who helped get the whole thing off the ground. “They’re sustainable products, look fantastic, and the Mass Timber perfectly suits the needs of constructing the feature canopy which helps elevate the building into worldclass category. “It droops over the top of the building. It’s based on the story of the Pokeka, the cloak that cut the Grey River gorge. With over 1500 components, four different design offices, five different factories, and installed by a local contractor – it’s a stunning feature,” says Sam. The building is an excellent example of Sam and Tess’s determination to exceed client’s expectations, and to deliver projects sustainably, on time and on budget. That they are part and parcel of re-invigorating the West Coast one beautifully designed and crafted building at a time is something they’re both aware of and work hard to achieve to the highest possible standard. Another part of their business is managing regular due diligence inspections for Runanga property purchases throughout the South Island. “We manage the process for the Runanga whether it’s engineering inspections, looking at any seismic strengthening needed, or assessing the feasibility of what the property could be used for, revenue opportunities such as rental return or through tourism operations, that type of thing,” explains Sam. With several large-scale projects already in the early design management stages 2024 is shaping up as another big year for Smart Project Management but Sam is always on the lookout for another project. As far as he’s concerned ‘Your project is not just another project it is seen as ours and delivered with that mindset.” It’s a mindset that works well for both Sam and his clients as he successfully delivers projects big and small.
