The 2000sqm building, constructed by Calder Stewart, offers a 1600smq canopy and will significantly increase the company’s capacity in the region as well as provide a much more efficient service, says Bascik Transport general manager Owain Davies. “When we started in Dunedin in 2013 we were working alongside another transport company and had a small area. The efficiencies out of this new site will be a game changer. We see this part of the country as a growth area, which is why we’ve established this new facility here,” he says. Bascik Transport’s Dunedin facility covers Oamaru through to Balclutha. The new site has 19 staff including a dedicated administration/customer service team member. The fleet has been updated. “Before we were doing the administration out of Christchurch so now we have someone on the ground there resulting in a much more personal services,” says Owain. “We see this part of the country as a growth area, which is why we’ve established this new facility here.” Owain says Bascik Transport is in the process of organising an MPI transitional facility at the Dunedin headquarters giving it the ability to unload imported containers. This is earmarked to be up and running mid January. Bascik’s new Dunedin facility will complement the new transport hub in Christchurch unveiled mid 2023. The distribution hub spans 6000sqm with canopies throughout giving 5000sqm of undercover loading area. Bascik Transport is one of the largest users of KiwiRail for transporting goods from Auckland to the South Island and the distribution hub serves as the focal point for the goods that enter Bascik’s South Island hubs, where they are unloaded and distributed. It’s not the only project the company has underway as Bascik Transport continues to grow. A new facility in Nelson is underway and will be operational by mid 2024. “It will be similar to the Dunedin project – a large purpose built site with MPI capabilities to unload import containers,” says Owain. A depot in Timaru will open in April with a team of five staff and three to four trucks. “It’s been a way to reduce the number of trucks on the main road between Christchurch and Timaru. So will run larger units but a smaller number,” explains Owain. He says this is a good example of the company’s commitment to becoming Toitū carbon reduce certified. With the assistance of Toitū, Bascik is in the process of accurately measuring its greenhouse gas emissions and putting in place strategies to manage and reduce impacts. Bascik Transport is working to become certified and compliant with the programme to be independently verified, which will be undertaken annually to maintain accreditation once gained. Partnering with KiwiRail is another example. It has enabled Bascik Transport to significantly reduce carbon emissions and diesel consumption. Owain says that rail transport’s ability to move large quantities of goods with fewer emissions and less road congestion aligns seamlessly with the company’s vision of eco-conscious logistics. Bascik Transport’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond rail utilisation. The company’s forward-thinking approach involves promoting bulk freighting, which reduces the number of inter-island trips and minimises the carbon footprint associated with frequent small shipments. “We encourage our clients to freight their goods in bulk, reducing the impact that transporting smaller products more frequently into South Island destinations has on our environment,” he says. Founded in 1970 Bascik Transport has become a name synonymous with efficiency, reliability and sustainability, solidifying its position as a trailblazer in the logistics and transportation industry. As Bascik Transport continues to redefine industry standards, the company’s future plans and goals reflect its dedication to expansion and innovation with more projects in the pipeline. “We’re always looking at what we can do next.”
