Working out of their head office and workshops in Woolston, Welding and Engineering’s team has gained an enviable reputation for delivering high quality results on large and complex projects. A boiler maker by trade, company director Chris Robert has over 41 years’ welding and project experience and first started his own company, Welds Ltd, some 21 years ago installing the steelwork and fabricating metalwork for Cathedral Junction. Following the Canterbury earthquakes, Chris could see the pressing need for experienced welders and people with structural steel know-how to help in the rebuild effort. It inspired him to forge the company he leads today, Welding and Engineering Ltd, which has played a pivotal part in the region’s recovery and continues to take on many challenging projects across the city and beyond, from earthquake strengthening to new-build structural frames, across both residential and commercial projects. Welding and Engineering is a true one-stop shop for structural and qualified welding and fabrication, with QS, drafting and design services available to complement the workshop team. The company mostly services Christchurch and Canterbury but has flexibility to work anywhere. Welding and Engineering is a member of SCNZ, HERA, SITE SAFE, SITE WISE, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE and is a SFC certified Fabricator Category 3 including ISO 3834 part 2. From a customer perspective, these certifications demonstrate not just that a consistent high standard is being met but also that the company holds itself accountable for the quality of its work. “We have invested heavily back into the company to ensure that we have cemented our footprint in Christchurch as industry professionals, delivering a quality product and with safety of people paramount. In fact, health and safety is a number one priority for us and we take it very seriously, employing a full-time health and safety manager.” In the post-earthquake years, Welding and Engineering became heavily involved in specialised earthquake strengthening work as well as delivering structural steel work for new buildings. “The experience of doing the specialised earthquake work amplified our skill set and so today we get the jobs no-one else will or can do, working with clients, owners, and tenants to get steel where it’s needed, whether existing structures or new builds. We have the equipment, and between our team we have over ‘one hundred years’ experience!” With a staff of over 20, Chris describes Welding and Engineering as ‘a small-big company’ – big enough to take on large projects, but small enough to have that close working relationship with clients. It’s a local homegrown company, with all steel used meeting New Zealand steel standards. “I’m the managing director but I’m also a tradesman with a hands-on approach. We work very closely together and there’s great camaraderie. in fact, we have senior staff members that have been with us for over 18 years. Our goal is always to ensure that everyone who comes to us gets the help they require.” Chris would like to acknowledge his team and especially some of his senior staff including: Muryel (Draughtsman), Aaron Sullivan (Workshop Manager), Jason Morgan (Lead Site Installer), Fraser Cook (Commercial Manager), Ruth (Quantity Surveyor), Krutick (H&S and QS), Kelly Roberts (Accounts and administration) and Nick Coles our General manager. The workshop is well-equipped with overhead cranes along with plasma processing machinery and other specialised equipment required to complete the work. With a strong commitment to upskilling and training, Welding and Engineering actively employs apprentices whilst giving back to the community we have supported many initiatives to include Gumboot Friday, Surf and rescue, gifted a sign written vehicle to CURE KIDS and supporting Moore Park Speedway. Welding and Engineering’s sister company called Metalworks NZ Limited is situated in Hornby and employs a team of around eight staff members, undertaking the fabrication and installation of Aluminium, Stainless steel, architectural handrails, balustrades, and shop fit out steel work.
