Designs reflect clients’ personalities Designing individual architectural statements which reflect each client’s vision and meet budgetary requirements, CA Architecture applies its technical expertise rather than any architectural vernacular to create award-winning projects which are positively infused with the personalities of a diverse range of clients. In 2021, CA Architecture worked with Irving Builders to provide a lovely older couple with a brand new home in Sumner. Having moved from their earthquake damaged hilltop home into an 80sqm bungalow on the flats, the couple had CA Architecture and Irving Builders redesign and rebuild their existing garage into a one bedroom unit which they moved into while the wee bungalow was relocated and work began on their dream home. Casey Curtis of CA Architecture says with the couple downsizing from their large hilltop home, and a lifestyle which included a lot of time spent with their grandchildren, a decently sized living space was important for their new home. Casey incorporated a spacious open plan living area with raked ceilings and skylights for a feeling of light, open space. The contemporary look at the front of the home, with plaster and cedar cladding and a mono-pitch roof, belies the absolute character this couple has breathed into their interior and backyard. Eclectic furnishings and artworks complement a stunning white and poppy splashback in the kitchen, while exposed timber beams in the living space are emulated with the cedar-clad verandah at the rear. The verandah is tiled with some very interesting and old-school clay tiles which seem to give the game away about exactly who lives in this unique home. Meanwhile the very accessible backyard is both relaxing and rewarding. It has been designed and built with a huge array of raised garden beds surrounded by concrete pathways. This project won Irving Builders a bronze award at the 2021 House of the Year competition, with judges saying the result is well worth the effort that has gone into achieving it. Leadlight windows from their hilltop home have been incorporated for a meaningful connection between the old and new, and the home is infused with the charm and personality of its delighted and delightful owners. “We have overcome plenty of challenges including a compliance battle for the 11m apex roof pitch and the re-engineering of spaces for an improved aesthetic.” More recently, CA Architecture has worked with Senna Developments on a project which is about as different as you can get. A high-end, bespoke boutique man cave project in Lincoln brings cars, motorbikes, and an extensive vintage memorabilia collection into a luxury home. “This is a commercial scale project in a residential setting and required ardent collaboration between CA Architecture, Hierarchy Group, and Senna Developments,” Casey says. “We have overcome plenty of challenges including a compliance battle for the 11m apex roof pitch and the re-engineering of spaces for an improved aesthetic.” Casey is now looking forward to a changing architectural landscape in Canterbury as urban intensification will soon be starting to gain traction in the suburbs “In suburban areas we will see an increase in smaller homes, more two to three storey homes, and two to three homes on one site,” she says. “People are going to start looking at the development opportunities their properties may open up to with the proposed planning changes of PC14. We can help from the feasibility stage, showing developers and home owners what is and isn’t possible and giving them the options for what they could achieve on any given site, to confirm if the figures stack up for them financially.” Proud to be associated with Sit down with us to make your dream home a reality lance.irving@irvingbuilders.co.nz (03) 318 1770 New Builds Renovation RetainingWall
