102 | COMMUNITY Chatham Islands Enterprise Trust T T Virginia Wright Boosting Chathams’ ongoing welfare Tthe Chatham Island Enterprise Trust oversees much of the island’s crucial infrastructure such as the airport. “All current and future Chatham Islanders are beneficiaries of the trust so on their behalf we aim to manage that in a socially responsible way that still brings enough revenue in to keep everything else ticking along.” When Hamish Chisholm left the Chatham Islands to board at Christchurch Boys High School then to get a degree in law and the arts at the University of Canterbury he had no idea that by his mid 30’s he’d find himself living back on the island and fully immersed in its welfare. A sixth generation Chatham Islander Hamish went back home after completing his degrees and worked in conservation before he headed overseas. “I didn’t want to start anything too serious so I picked up a job trapping on the Tuku Nature Reserve, then did my OE and realised I’d quite enjoyed the work and went back to it,” he explains. The roughly 2500 acres in the southwest corner of the island known as the Tuku Nature Reserve was donated to the Crown by Hamish’s grandfather, Manual Tuanui, when it was shown to be the habitat of the Chatham Island Taiko, a burrowing seabird thought to have been extinct for 150 years which is still critically endangered. The Chatham Islands is one of the most diverse seabird breeding sites in the world with 28 different species breeding there, mostly on their offshore islands and steppes because of pressure from predators on the mainland. The job that piqued Hamish’s interest to come back to the island now involves working to protect all the breeding birds on the island by removing 3 species of mammalian predators: possums, rats and feral cats, and his work with the island’s best interests at heart doesn’t end there. “I was born and bred on the island and I’m back in a full-time role doing conservation work and leading the Predator Free Chathams project for the Chatham Islands Landscape Restoration Trust.
