Clinching the Supreme Contractor of the Year Award at the 2024 CCNZ Canterbury Westland Awards was all the more sweet for Isaac Construction, given their recent supreme success elsewhere in the South Island. Previously, Isaac Construction won the supreme award at the 2023 CCNZ Otago Awards, with the same title awarded to Simcox Construction, part of the Isaac Group, at the 2023 CCNZ Nelson Marlborough Awards. “We have won that CCNZ Canterbury Westland supreme award before, but this time was the most satisfying because it’s backing up our other regional successes,” says Scott Ford, general manager of contracting for the Isaac Group. “These consecutive awards are like a tip of the hat towards how we’re going as a business, our ethos and how we operate.” A key point of difference for Isaac Construction – and a source of pride for their team – is the essential part they play in upholding the unique legacy of their founders, Sir Neil and Lady Diana Isaac, through the work of The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust. “That’s our purpose and why we exist – it’s what inspires us to deliver well on infrastructure projects.” With its positive workplace culture, Isaac Construction has attracted and retained a top team, from talented engineers and project managers through to meticulous operators, foremen and supervisors. “That’s what helps us to deliver those complex projects, which require so much planning and exact work. We’ve got that depth through all staff that enables us to deliver to a high standard,” says Scott. At the 2024 CCNZ Canterbury Westland Awards, Isaac Construction received a host of other accolades including Community Image Award (Orion 66kV Bromley-Milton substations); Underground Services Award; Category C, projects $2.5m-$5m (Memorial Ave watermain renewals); and Highly Commended in Category B, projects $500,000-$2.5m (Arthur’s Pass Railway Station track upgrades) and in Category D, projects over $5m (Orion 66kV Bromley-Milton substations). At the national awards, Isaac Construction’s Christchurch team also took out Category 3, projects $5m-$20m, for the Orion 66kV Milton to Bromley project. In awarding the supreme title to Isaac Construction, the judges observed that despite being faced with an array of projects to consider, one contractor was always at or near the top of the class. They said: “Isaac Construction stood out for repeatedly excelling with complex traffic and local resident management and developing and executing highly detailed construction programmes within challenging site constraints. Its impressive record included respect for the environment and continuously operating to its own high quality and health, safety and well-being values.” The award-winning 66kV project exemplifies the complexity of work Isaac Construction undertakes, in this case to replace ageing underground cables for Orion with a new underground cable from Bromley Substation to Milton Substation. It involved installing 7.5km of new cable through some of Christchurch’s busiest roads and intersections, and required extensive engagement with local residents and businesses. Isaac Construction has other large-scale projects on the books in 2025, including another major 66kV cabling project for Orion, a complex Nor’West Arc cycleway project, a full infrastructure upgrade in Burnham and ongoing work preparing streets and utilities around Te Kaha Stadium.
