REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Dart Engineering T T Karen Phelps One-stop-shop for engineering needs The company, which began as a small Queenstown workshop, now operates across multiple locations including two facilities in Dunedin. Dart Engineering has undergone significant expansion growing from a regional operation to become one of the leading engineering specialists in the South Island. “We’ve identified specific niches in the market where our problem-solving abilities and expertise give us a competitive edge,” says Regan Williamson, owner of Dart Engineering. The company, which began as a small Queenstown workshop, now operates across multiple locations including two facilities in Dunedin. The company’s Queenstown workshop, located at SH6, Rapid 67, Frankton, offers two lathes, a mill and a Durma press across its 500-square-metre facility. In 2020 Dart opened its heavy engineering facility at 343 Kaikorai Valley Road, Dunedin, featuring state-of-the-art welding equipment, rolls, gantry crane and other specialist machinery. This 2,000-square-metre covered workshop serves as the company’s head office and main fabrication hub. Dart Engineering offers a light fabrication workshop as well at 391 Kaikorai Valley Road which has 1,300 square metres of production space and 225 square metres of offices and display areas. Further expansion followed in 2023 when it acquired the Vulcan Foundry, one of the only die cast gravity fed foundries left in New Zealand. “The foundry acquisition was a strategic move to expand our knowledge and capabilities within the industry,” explains Regan. “It allows us to offer an even more comprehensive range of services to our clients.” This growth trajectory has positioned Dart Engineering as an industry leader in the Southern Lakes Area. Regan says that Dart Engineering has positioned itself as a one-stop solution for a diverse range of engineering needs. It offers structural steel fabrication for residential and commercial developments, stainless steel and alloy work for architectural features and hospitality maintenance, and serves as the largest stockist of engineering products and materials in the Southern Lakes Region. “By bringing specialisation and detailed industry understanding together under one roof, we can provide an efficient and quality job across a broad range of operations,” notes Regan. “This integration of skills and services benefits our customers, especially when tackling complex projects.” The company reached a significant milestone when it secured the largest seismic steel package in New Zealand for the Dunedin Hospital Outpatients building, showcasing Dart Engineering’s innovative approach to complex engineering challenges. “We had to think outside the box with the outpatients project, which led us to become one of the industry leaders in technology using the first robot, known as the Jaibolt, to drill over 20,000 holes accurately marked out by the total station to allow the seismic steel to be attached to the main steelwork.” Dart Engineering uses the sophisticated drawing programme Tekla to create detailed models for quoting compliance. Dart Engineering has met the rigorous CC3 certification standards required for critical projects. Regan says that he aims to continue Dart Engineering’s trajectory. “Further growth remains our aim,” says Regan. We’ll continue to identify opportunities where our unique capabilities can add value while maintaining our commitment to precision and quality.” We’ve got you covered Christchurch Galvanizing Facility The zinc bath dimensions are 7m long by 1.3m wide by 2.4m deep Choose climate smart durability; a low embodied carbon product with low maintenance over its life cycle, that can be recycled for a sustainable future. 5 Chinook Place, Hornby, Christchurch P: 03 349 0290 or 0800 446 8347 • E: pmpchchadmin@perry.co.nz These dimensions enable steel items up to 7m in length to be single dipped or up to 9.6m in length to be double end-dipped Perry Metal Protection has been strengthening steel through Hot Dip Galvanising (HDG) in New Zealand since 1974.
