Aotea Electric - Wanaka T T Aimee Wilson “The team plays together and is more than happy to work together. Culture is a big thing for us.” CONTRACTING Aotea Electric Wanaka has become a market leader in the industry, particularly for its electrical design work throughout the Upper Clutha. Manager Bill Moore has 20 years’ experience with Aotea Electric, firstly as an apprentice in Queenstown and now leading 35 staff in the fast-growing Wanaka branch. Aotea Electric Wanaka is divided into specialty areas, each with its own divisional manager, and covers everything from electrical servicing, and domestic and commercial appliance repairs, through to design-and-build housing, and commercial, solar and EV chargers, and air-conditioning. Quality of service and making sure the customer gets what they ask for, is what set them apart from their competitors, Bill says. He has seen a lot of changes in 20 years, and the health and safety and wellbeing of staff have moved front and centre. This is important when having to cater for such diversity within the team, including more females coming through, he says. “The team plays together and is more than happy to work together. Culture is a big thing for us.” Recently, 15 members of the team hiked up Corner Peak, near Lake Hawea – no easy feat – as part of a Mates in Construction mental health initiative. However, the cost of living in a resort area is restrictive to attracting qualified staff, so Bill concentrates on training apprentices – there are currently 10 on board. The company is supportive of the high school Gateway programme, which encourages many young people to the trades industries. In fact, three of its current shareholders came through as apprentices. “It’s good clean and rewarding work. Seeing a project through to completion and lighting it up for the first time is still a buzz for the staff and management. We are all proud of the work we do,” Bill says. Big new exciting projects, such as the renovation work at Cardrona skifield, keeps the team interested, and Aotea Electric was proud of its work – from design to handover – on the new Fresh Choice supermarket in Hawea. Working with the food store chain and Breen Construction to oversee the electrical design and build of the supermarket, was just the type of challenge that the Aotea team thrives on. Architectural work is a market Aotea Electric Wanaka specifically targets, Bill says. “We are known for our high-end housing capabilities with very intricate detail.” There was plenty of other work keeping the team busy – the introduction of a specialist solar team last year is an area that is growing quickly. The company has come a long way since Bill started as manager in 2012 with only four ‘tool belt’ staff. “We have grown and diversified with the needs of the town.” Their Google reviews from many happy customers speak for themselves, and as a thank you to all its loyal client base, Aotea Electric Wanaka supports many local initiatives through sponsorship and donations to local good causes. 23 Gordon Road, Wanaka | Phone: (03) 443 1260 Email: wanaka.reception@aoteaelectric.co.nz For anything electrical, from Appliance repairs to Commercial builds.
