The project, led by the vision of Wanbudi Investment Ltd’s Alex Wang, is not just about bricks and mortar but about restoring a piece of the town’s nucleus. The original Harbour Light Theatre, built in 1916, was constructed as a cinema and live theatre. At the time of the 2011 earthquakes, it was used as a live music and entertainment venue, but was irreparably damaged and demolished shortly thereafter. For over a decade, its absence has left a noticeable gap in Lyttelton’s main shopping precinct, London St. A passionate advocate for Lyttelton’s re-establishment, Alex sees the rebuild as a responsibility to the community: ensuring the refurbished Harbour Light site contributes both aesthetically and functionally to the town’s unique character, and adds to the charm experienced by the multitude of visitors who arrive in the port on cruise ships. This is the first project for Christchurchbased development company Wanbudi Investment Ltd. Alex and his wife emigrated to New Zealand from China in 2017, leaving his career in Human Resources behind. “When we came here, I wanted to do something I was interested in, and the building industry seemed to contain a lot of opportunities,” he says. Alex spent one year at Polytech studying carpentry, and then worked in the construction industry to gain experience. When the opportunity to develop the Lyttelton heritage site arose, he knew he couldn’t let it pass by. “I wanted to start a project from scratch, rather than refurbishing an existing building,” he says. “I was warned that this project would be time-consuming and financially costly, but I wanted to make it happen for the community.” The building is designed as a two-storey, 300 square metre development. The ground floor has been billed as a retail space suitable for a hospitality business, with a 5.5m high ceiling and rear courtyard. Level one, with views of the harbour, sea and mountains, has incorporated two 60 square metre one-bedroom units, which Alex intends to retain as luxury short-term visitor accommodation. Architecturally, the building’s design draws inspiration from the original structure, such as its column design and balconies, while incorporating modern elements that enhance its usability and sustainability. With the project due to be completed at the end of 2025, Alex says the project is not only meaningful for him. “It is also meaningful for the Lyttelton community,” he says. “The vacant site will be full after 13 years, renamed ‘Harbour Light’ after the original building.” MLC Building, previously known as Westside Building is made up of a highly MLC Building is a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality service.
