DEVELOPMENT Kevler Homes has dramatically reduced the time frame for greenfield developments, successfully delivering new homes in half the usual time while incorporating significant sustainability features. Its current Harrow Green development in Rolleston, Canterbury is the first time this methodology has been implemented in the region. Rob Preston, operations manager of Kevler Homes, says the company presented Selwyn District Council with a new approach to combine civil work with residential construction. This involved ing,to speed up the whole process, reduce waiting times and stagger the financial investment for the company. “The whole process has been designed to be incredibly efficient,” he explains. “Recent research has shown that the average build time in New Zealand had increased from 13 months to 19 months over the past decade. Utilising this process, and working in conjunction with council, the first 23 houses from greenfield development to people moving in was just seven months in Harrow Green.” This efficiency has resulted in cost savings, and created opportunities to include additional features in the homes. Each house comes equipped with solar panels, projected to save homeowners $1000 in energy costs annually. The properties are also future-proofed with EV charger pre-wiring, ducted heat pumps with fresh-air intake, humidity-controlled fans in all bathrooms, as well as security cameras, video intercom, attic storage, motorised blinds and automated irrigation system. These features are all standard in a Kevler Home Rob says the development showcases the company’s commitment to sustainability in terms of its construction practices as well. It is the first to use Fulton Hogan’s educed nergy sphalt (REA), and construction methods have been optimised to reduce waste and emissions. The company has implemented bulk-delivery systems for materials, and utilised low-carbon concrete throughout the project. “As an example through the civil works in the first 23 lots, we saved 30 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere,” he says. Started in 2014 by Ricky Wang, a licensed building practitioner , Kevler Homes has built extensively throughout Canterbury, particularly in the rapidly growing Selwyn District. Ricky brings over a decade of building expertise to the company, which has now built more than 600 homes. Rob says the company stands out for its customer-focused approach, offering a range of house plans to suit individual requirements and sites. It also provides full design-andbuild options. A distinctive feature is its -year maintenance warranty, the industry standard of 12 months. “One of our taglines is ‘be part of the change’. We are really wanting to change the industry for better,” says Rob. The Harrow Green development, currently 25% complete, will eventually comprise 2 lots. Located in Rolleston, just 30 minutes from Christchurch’s CBD, the development is wellserved by cycleways and direct bus routes. The area features numerous amenities, including primary schools, a new high school, district library, community facilities, and Foster Park with its 11 sports fields and shared walking and cycling paths. Kevler Homes has a range of turnkey house-and-land packages on offer with additional incentives. For example, those who own an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid will receive a free EV charger and 30,000km of free EV road user charges, valued at $2200. Kevler Homes’ show home, located at 83 Ashurst Crescent, off Lemonwood Drive in Rolleston, is open Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm to 4pm, offering the opportunity experience first-hand the difference Kevler is bringing.
