McKay Lang Ltd “We have some fantastic partnerships formed in the North Island and we are keen to continue exploring these opportunities.” CONSTRUCTION Christchurch-based construction company, McKay Lang Ltd has built a strong reputation for delivering bespoke office, retail, and hospitality fit-outs, while also emerging as a leader in earthquake strengthening and light-commercial projects. Since its establishment in its current form in 2018, the company has carried out numerous commercial fit-outs for retail spaces, hospitality venues, and hotels, with a growing client base of reputable brands. There is now a team of 18 industry experts working on projects across the country. With its own joinery manufacturing facility established in 2022, the company has full oversight of quality control over its custom-made fittings, meeting the high standards of the bespoke fit-out market, managing director Heath McKay says. “It’s all in-house.” Alongside this, seismic strengthening had become a large part of the company’s work, coming off the back of the 2010/2011 earthquakes that devastated Christchurch, and the legislative changes that followed. The company works with major clients such as the Cotton On Group, Flight Centre, and Noel Leeming, and collaborates with large shopping centres, including The Palms Shopping Centre, Westfield Riccarton, and Dress Smart Hornby. Heath says a key strength of the company is its client-focused approach, which has led to strong relationships and repeat business. “We’ve got a huge amount of repeat customers that have stuck with our brand.” Seismic-strengthening projects remain a key focus, with work being carried out nationwide in cities such as Auckland, Hamilton, and Wellington. The company recently completed a 12-month strengthening project at North City Shopping Centre in Porirua, and plenty more projects are on the horizon. “We have some fantastic partnerships formed in the North Island and we are keen to continue exploring these opportunities,” Heath says. Despite its national recognition, McKay Lang Ltd remains committed to its South Island roots. Recent fit-outs include a new café at Christchurch International Airport with another repeat international brand, and a Travel Money retailer in Cashel Mall, Christchurch. “McKay Lang Ltd have a strong group of subcontractors across all trades, who help them deliver these high-level fit-outs and acknowledge the hard work by others to get their projects to completion, often in very short time frames.” While retail has faced challenges in recent years, there are optimistic signs in the industry, Heath says. “We’ve got clients that are talking to us about different things happening in the centres.” Looking ahead, McKay Lang Ltd aims to expand its seismic-strengthening portfolio, with a large role in building safer, stronger commercial spaces across New Zealand, and to continue to build on their reputation as a leading company in the fit-out sector.
