From small beginnings, Matt Anderson-Stewart has grown his business to now becoming well recognised not just in the south, but also throughout Queenstown Lakes/Central Otago and in Christchurch. The company’s work has been acknowledged by the ADNZ (Architectural Designers New Zealand), with three awards on projects in Kingston, Waihopai and Queenstown. After finishing his school years in Invercargill, Matt furthered his studies in Christchurch and then Auckland in the field of architecture. After graduating from Unitec, he then spent time in London gaining experience before coming home in 2012, working for an Invercargill company before setting himself up in business. Now in its 11th year and with a prominent spot in the heart of Windsor after successfully developing a new, mixed-use building, the MAS architecture team includes three additional qualified staff as well as an interior designer, along with admin support from Matt’s wife and his mother. He also opened another branch in Christchurch after successfully tapping into that market and making key connections following the devastating earthquakes. Examples of the team’s design work are many and varied – from high-end architectural in Southland and Queenstown Lakes, through to light commercial and even some bespoke cribs on the southern coast. Matt says his point of difference is the team’s response to every project. “We design for the site and listen to the client’s needs and from there we take on board every aspect of the site and client’s brief. We like to involve the clients as much as possible.” Having their own interior designer adds that extra level of detail, and being able to take the client on a complete journey from beginning to end – both internally and externally. The design-and-build industry has always been challenging, but with building code updates and regulations the industry experts are expected to keep up and become more involved. With the recent NZBC insulation updates, it’s about trying to find smart solutions whatever the budget – especially in terms of sustainability, “and still delivering a project that has our name and identity on it,” Matt says.. He is very mindful of different clients’ budgets – tailoring his ideas and processes to ensure clients’ needs are met, and working with them to ensure the end goal is achieved.
