T T to page 68 Roberts Gray Architects is a comparative newcomer on New Zealand’s design scene, having only started four years ago, yet its three young directors – architects Nick Roberts, Jimmy Gray and Elspeth Gray – are already being hailed as the likely vanguard of the future having won top honours at last year’s architecture awards. The trio met while studying architecture together in Wellington before each left New Zealand to travel and work internationally. All the while, they stayed in touch about a potential future collaboration to combine their diverse ideas and interests. This came to pass in June 2021 with the launch of Roberts Gray Architects. While based in Auckland, the three regularly travel to Wānaka to work on projects there. Each brings a different perspective to the practice and their appreciation of each other’s point of view is central to their approach. The result is a rich layering of ideas, reflecting their belief that architecture should be understood on many levels and communicate many narratives. Their debut project – the Wānaka S.K.I. House – is now recognised as one of the country’s most stunning homes, having won both a 2024 Southern Architecture Award and a 2024 New Zealand Architecture Award. Both formal and free-flowing, the light-filled interior responds to different modes of living through the seasons, and to Wānaka’s dynamic landscape, while at its heart is an inter-generational vision. “The ideas that underpin the design of the S.K.I.
