B Central Building owner Brendon Smithies has had a long career in the construction industry, originally training as a joiner and eventually moving into the building trade. He enjoyed a wide variety of experience before deciding to try his hand at transportable homes, following Covid, building them under the name B Central Transportable Homes. “I told him he better do it before he got old,” says his wife and business partner Kate. “He loves building transportables because there is so much variety. We have a range of concept plans to give our customers a starting point, then everything is customised to suit their special requirements. Brendon gets to utilise the high standards of finishing he learned as a joiner to produce beautiful homes we can all be proud of.” While the majority of B Central Transportable Homes’ designs to date have been large, three-bedroom homes, the company also offers a one-bedroom granny flat option and this was taken up recently for an elderly mother to live in on her daughter’s property. With her continued independence in mind, Brendon and Kate provided a customised solution with wider doorways and step-free access for a walker and wheelchair-friendly layout. A transportable home going to Orepuki in Southland as a couple’s holiday home overlooking the seascape, meant materials with high resistance to corrosion and stainless steel fixings to prevent rusting were required for this sea-spray zone. For transportable homes destined for subdivisions with design covenants, Brendon and Kate can customise building and cladding materials and roof pitches to meet prescribed design requirements. They worked together on a recent project that had a 120sqm, three-bedroom home placed horizontally on the truck for a straightforward offload at its Cromwell site with no crane required.
