Taylor Made Construction BUILDING The husband-and-wife team behind Blenheim-based Taylor Made Construction have kept their renovation and alteration business simple and honest, which has proved to be a winning formula. Dion Taylor, a licensed building practitioner with 25 years’ experience, and his wife Stephanie started the company in October 2016. Dion had previously been a foreman on large, million-dollar projects that averaged six to 12 months, and had become tired of working on the same project for this length of time. “He was wanting a change from working on these large commercial projects, and had a desire to strike out on his own,” Stephanie says. While studying primary teaching, she worked with Dion during the summer holidays and found they worked well together. So, she deferred her studies and joined him full-time in early 2017. The company’s main focus is on renovations and alterations, which brings with it plenty of variety, she says. “We have built fences and decks, installed kitchens, laid flooring, removed windows – anything building related, we can do,” Stephanie says. With just the two of them in the business, they are flexible to working outside of business hours, or away from home if required. “We tend to only have one or two larger jobs on the go at any given time, which gives us the flexibility to drop things if there are urgent repairs or maintenance that we are asked to do.” A current project renovating an old villa involved converting two bedrooms into a lounge, and eventually completing two other bedrooms and lining the newly created kitchen space. An ensuite was also added, and the laundry area will be re-jigged to complete the project. They also work with a vineyard employment agency, re-arranging existing motel units into lighter, roomier spaces that meet housing standards for the RSE (recognised seasonal employees) workers, and carrying out general maintenance work. Other work includes maintenance jobs at the local stadium, including the recent repair of poolside tiles, and they are in the process of removing, sanding, re-varnishing and replacing all the wooden plank seating around the pool area and in the changing rooms. They also re-jigged spaces for various clients, creating offices and work spaces. As it is a busy public facility, this work often has to be carried out of hours to not disturb the day-to-day running of the complex. Following the devastating floods on the North Island’s East Coast two years ago, the couple helped convert containers into living spaces for displaced people. Dion and Stephanie like to have a few months’ work ahead at any given stage, and have some clients that let them know when they have non-urgent work. “So, if we ever find a quiet patch, we have them to fall back on.” Stephanie says it is the relationships with clients that ensure multiple repeat jobs. “One client who loves to buy houses to do up and on-sell calls us ‘her builders’. Her projects are always fun.” Edridges Contracting often sends work their way, and they have carried out many concrete jobs for them from dish drains, to inlet/outlet pipework and spillways for vineyard reservoirs. And friends and family in the banking and real estate fields pass work on to them, as well as repairs and maintenance to their rental properties. “Repeat business is always a good feeling, or jobs that have been recommended by previous clients,” Stephanie says. Their success came from working as a team, being flexible and listening to what the client actually wants, she says. With their home being their office, they have low overheads and are able to keep costs in check, enabling them to provide a great service for a realistic price, and with honest communication, very few unexpected issues arise during builds.
