BUILDING Despite its reputation for high-end, custom-built homes, Tomlins Building Ltd is keen to dispel the myth that quality comes with an exorbitant price tag. “As we are known for our high-class buildings, people think we won’t be available or will be too dear – but we have proven otherwise,” managing director Paul Tomlins says. “We can often offer a quote that is very competitive with other building companies.” A family-run business based in Invercargill, Tomlins Building operates throughout the region, including in Queenstown and Arrowtown, and has been a trusted name in the construction industry for more than 30 years. Unlike many builders, Tomlins Building employs all its own staff, rather than outsourcing to building contractors, and supplies quality contractors that have been used on many projects. The company takes great pride in its work, focusing predominantly on new builds and hispec, custom-designed homes tailored to the needs of each client. However, they are equally at home constructing practical, functional spaces and are happy to take on small-scale renovations as well. Projects range from modest two-bedroom farm workers’ cottages to grand eight-bedroom, eight-bathroom residences in Queenstown. Regardless of size or budget, the company upholds the same high standard of quality. “They might look different, but the level of quality workmanship is the same,” Paul says. “And we provide the entire build, from a clear section to the complete, landscaped project, to ensure the process is stress-free for our clients.” In a nod to creativity and innovation, one current build incorporates tilt panels and a steel frame. Paul and his team enjoy taking on jobs that other builders might shy away from, making them a sought-after choice for clients with specific or complex requirements. Ten staff members work on the building side of the business, with Paul on site as often as possible. House-and-land packages are also available for new builds in the Invercargill area, ensuring future clients have access to their expertise in prime locations. A major factor in Tomlins Building’s longevity and success is its dedication to client relationships – Paul ensures communication remains at the forefront of every project. “We are very client-based,” he says. “I will stay in contact with clients as much or as little as they like. Some clients want to see very little of me, others would like regular updates and communication.” Paul understands construction projects can be stressful, and keeping clients informed – especially when changes in plans or timelines occur – is crucial to a positive experience. “You have to be honest,” he says. “A big part of our philosophy is communicating with clients and keeping them well-informed.” This philosophy extends beyond project completion. Many of Tomlins Building’s clients return for multiple builds, a testament to the trust and rapport the company has built over the years. “There wouldn’t be a client that I couldn’t bump into in a restaurant and not have a friendly chat with,” Paul says. With a name built on trust, quality and affordability, Tomlins Building Ltd continues to thrive in a competitive industry.
