Structur Building T T Bernadette Cooney BUILDING A premier hand-crafted pergola for a pickleball court project within an exclusive private residence in Dunedin and a new public housing project in Mosgiel are among the building successes delivered by Structur Building Ltd over the last 12 to 18 months. Co-founded by licensed building practitioners Cole Bardwell and Ash Eustace, the company has steadily built a diverse portfolio of unique works across new residential, public housing, light commercial and. more recently, insurance repair work. Working throughout Dunedin and Mosgiel since its establishment in 2019, Structur Building comprises a dedicated team of six skilled builders, making a name for high-quality craftsmanship, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence. One of Structur Building’s recent standout projects has been the completion of a stunning pickleball court for a secluded, private residence within Dunedin. What started as a derelict tennis court overrun by weeds was transformed into an architectural masterpiece featuring a bespoke pergola, an outdoor kitchen, and a life-sized chess court seamlessly integrated into the deck. “Every detail, from the handcrafted archways to the custom stonework, was designed to honour both traditional carpentry and craftsmanship,” says Cole. The pergola, which serves as the centrepiece of the project, is an exquisite example of traditional carpentry blended with a contemporary vision. The archways, inspired by classic boat-building techniques, were meticulously handcrafted in Structur Building’s workshop. Stone masonry played a crucial role in bringing the landscaping vision to life. Each stone was carefully selected from bespoke quarries and arranged to appear as though it had naturally risen from the earth over centuries. Master stonemason Graham Bond played an integral role in achieving this effect, ensuring the materials kept their organic, lichen-covered beauty. The pergola’s roofing incorporates ‘dragon scale’ embossed copper tiles salvaged from the Christchurch Cathedral, lending a sense of heritage and timelessness to the space. “The client wanted something truly unique, and we were fortunate to source materials that carried historical significance,” says Cole. The project also included intricate lighting elements, including LED installations and a custom-designed ‘nest of lights’ chandelier. Every aspect of the space, from the bespoke outdoor kitchen to the seamless integration of the chess court into the decking, was crafted with precision and creativity. The company has also completed landscaping for a large-scale Kāinga Ora development on Lorne Street in Mosgiel. The team completed 26 decks, 2000 cubic squares of concrete work, and 330 metres of balustrading within a tight three-month deadline.
