30 | CONTRACTING Harliwich Holdings Iconic firm builds on proud legacy T T Karen Phelps H arliwich Holdings is quite possibly the oldest company of its kind in New Zealand. Established in 1906 to supply coal to the gold mining dredges on the Clutha River and deliver freight to Beaumont and Heriot before the railway reached Roxburgh, the company is now a major force in earthmoving and general contracting throughout Southland, Otago and the West Coast. Over the years Harliwich Holdings has helped shaped the landscape in the region building many subdivisions, highways and mountain roads, including the Treble Cone ski field road. The company has recently had a major shift when company owner Ken Harliwich sadly passed away. But Ken’s memory lives on and the proudly family owned and operated company going from strength to strength. The third generation continues the tradi - tion, with Ken’s son Brent Harliwich and son- in-law Lyndon Richards as directors, keeping the machines moving earth. New CEO Tony Smith is the first person out - side the family employed in a management role in the company and he says Ken gave him firm instructions as to the vision of Harliwich leading into the future. “It’s about carrying on Ken’s great work. “He told me the direction he wanted it to take – to remain family owned and be loyal to its strong customer base,” he says. With Tony taking over the helm, the focus is now to meet the demands of the growth of Central Otago. T T to page 33 Your business in need of new equipment?
