One of these was the Sumner Surf Lifesav- ing Club, where Action Scaffolding had the rare opportunity and tough challenge of scaf- folding right on the sand and into the sea. “I don’t know if anyone has done that before,” says Action Scaffolding managing director Mark Backhouse. “We have scaffolded out of the river before to repair one of the bridges, but the river didn’t have waves com- ing in and undermining the scaffolding.” The 460sqm building, designed by Wilson and Hill Architects and built by Miles Construc- tion, is a grand design that blends in with its landscape. With curved roofs, sloping walls, and angled soffits, the challenge to Action Scaffolding was to scaffold around many different angles. Action Scaffolding’s reputation for safe and secure scaffolding, efficient and on-time, has the company earmarked as a preferred supplier for a number of major Canterbury construction firms. With Miles Construction, Action Scaffolding is now involved in all of Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities’ development projects around Christchurch. A great working rela- tionship means Miles Construction is assured Action Scaffolding will provide experienced industry specialists and professional services. Action Scaffolding employs a skilled team of 22 scaffolders who work in line with Scaffold- ing and Rigging NZ and WorkSafe legislation. The company continues to increase its num- ber of ticketed scaffolders, with an advanced ticket holder on every gang and half of its staff ticketed to basic or elementary level. A builder by trade, Mark started buying scaf- folding to make his own construction business more efficient. Other builders wanted to use his scaffolding and business took off, so Mark retired from building and started full time management of Action Scaffolding in 2010. “As a builder myself, I know what the builders want from their scaffolding and their supplier,” Mark says. “Our scaffolding is not built from a scaffold- er’s point of view, it’s built from a builder’s point of view.” With a rush of demand after the Canterbury earthquakes, Mark quickly increased his staff and his stock. “We didn’t import it, we bought all New Zealand-made tubes and planks,” he says. “We bought as much locally as we pos- sibly could because I’m Canterbury born and bred, and I’m a firm believer in Canterbury looking after Canterbury, especially after what we’ve been through.” Action Scaffolding now holds considerable worth of stock and with a recent recruitment drive, is keeping up with increasing demand from the local construction industry. A one-stop-shop for all building needs, Ac- tion Scaffolding can also supply skips, tempo- rary fencing, portable toilets, wraps, and nets.
