TOURISM Opuke Thermal and Spa Pools: Methven Adventures “Guests will step straight from an automatic door into the pools rather than make a mad dash across cold concrete, and the building has nice things like under floor heating in the changing rooms, and the lockers are inside the building.” Catering separately to the needs of families, adults and private spa guests, the facility will offer a host of innovative customer experi- ences. “The family experience has some really great pools,” says James. “Guests will step straight from an automatic door into the pools rather than make a mad dash across cold concrete, and the building has nice things like under floor heating in the changing rooms, and the lockers are inside the building. The family area is generously specified for bathing space and variety.” Features such as rocks to climb, alcoves and star-lit caves to explore, a deep jump pool with jets that send you down a crazy river, water cannons and other interactive toys all add to the water fun experience. Adult-exclusive pools sit on the other side of the main building. Large waterfalls flow into a non-swimming lake, providing a buffer to the sounds of family fun on the other side. Adult visitors will also enjoy premier views, private alcoves, water jet massages, bubble therapy, sauna therapies, a cold plunge pools and luxury relaxation area. “There are similar things to the family pools with caves and fantastic lighting effects for nighttime operations. A lot of the adult pools have more integration with the building. “On one side of the bar we will have our restaurants and the adult bar, but on the oth- er side the pool comes right up to the seating around that area.” Part of the pool extends under the build- ing’s roofline so visitors are protected from the elements regardless of what the weather is doing. The spa experience will focus on total body wellness with therapists trained to deliver impeccable customer service. While James says Opuke will employ a team of 30 from General Manager to spa therapists to cleaners, he expects 150 jobs will be gener- ated locally, boosting the local economy. The project is expected to cost between $15 million and $17 million, of which $7.5 million was funded by way of a loan from the Pro- vincial Growth Fund (PGF) The business case prepared for the PGF estimated Opuke would add NZ$167 million to the regions GDP over the next 10 years. “We’re getting tremendous value for money because of the way our local contractors and suppliers have come on board and working with us. “Everyone has invested themselves in the project to ensure it’s successful and that is making a significant difference to the overall build cost.” While Shepphard & Rout Architects de- signed the building, Land Arch was engaged for the landscape architecture including the concept of the pools, the lakes, embankments and planting. “The pools are naturally a very important component of the complex and Land Arch has come up with some really cool ideas for how we can shape and position them. Powell Fenwick Ltd is doing a lot of work in the water treatment and filtration system. The lead contractor is Bradford Building from Ashburton.” James says the region has challenging days when the weather gets the better of almost every activity and it is hoped Opuke will pro- vide a great option on those days. “We feel having hot pools in Methven will really add to the experience in this area, which is a little undiscovered. The pools will provide businesses with a little bit more confidence that if there isn’t a good snow year, there is still another reason to come to this part of the world all year round.” We have 24 years experience in Urban Design, Public Spaces, Hotpools, Tourism Attractions, Hotels, Housing Projects, Regeneration Projects and Residential Landscape Design Call to discuss your project with Land Arch Limited Director and Landscape Architect Dan Rivers 0274 449 444 or email landarch@xtra.co.nz with your enquiry a 166 Moore St, Ashburton p 03 308 9008 e service@electraserve.co.nz w www.electraserve.co.nz Over 50 years experience in Electrical Solutions South Island wide the ElectraServe guarantee Blair Watson, Managing Director guarantees ElectraServe’s tradesmen’s workmanship.
