David Chilton and Garry Mayne formed Chil- ton + Mayne Architecture in 2010 after many years in the industry. Combining their skills and knowledge, and sharing their values and commitment, David and Garry provide collab- orative and tailored architectural solutions. “We want all of our projects to benefit from a collaborative approach, and this way we believe we give our clients the best outcome for their projects,” Garry says. Chilton + Mayne Architecture’s Ashbur- ton studio is centrally located and has been renovated to bring it up to current building standards. This renovation process allowed Chilton + Mayne Architecture to add its own flair to the 1950’s building. “We added a dark stained cedar clad façade to the front of the building. This treatment remained harmoni- ous to the existing building due to its careful consideration of proportion, symmetry, and quality of finish.” Internally, the studio has two meeting rooms, clad in dark stained timber feature walls to reference the front façade, a re- ception and waiting area, and a large open plan office creating a collaborative working environment. “Nothing goes out the door without each other seeing it,” Garry says. “The design phase is hands-on, and between us we create the best project we can.” Chilton + Mayne Architecture now has a studio based in Frankton from which the com- pany can service its Queenstown and Wanaka clients. “We are committed to applying our design expertise in the Queenstown Lakes re- gion,” Garry says. “It is an exciting place to be, and to be able to create long lasting, unique architecture for generations to come.” In today’s busy property market, mid Can- terbury is an equally exciting place for Chilton + Mayne Architecture. “Properties are being bought and sold, there’s plenty of new builds happening, and the quality of new builds is much higher today than it used to be. The briefs are always differ- ent, so no two houses are the same, and it’s quite an exciting space for us to be in.” Chilton + Mayne Architecture prides itself on its documentation, and builders like to build from the practice’s drawings. Once they understand their clients’ briefs, David and Garry are always keen to put ideas in front of their clients. They respond to both the brief and the site to form a perfect fit for the way clients want to live and play. A recent canal-front project at Lake Hood had Chilton + Mayne Architecture involved from the site selection stage, where David and Garry advised their client on the best available section to buy on the peninsula. “This was a west-facing section, so you’ve got the afternoon sun right where you want it, where you’re doing your outdoor entertaining overlooking the canal.” The clients liked gabled pavilion structures, so Chilton + Mayne Architecture created a design with two main pavilions holding the living and bedroom areas, and a space in between with a media room and the home’s front entrance. The pitched ceilings open up the interior and frame the living spaces, large windows capture and frame the views, and extensive use of cedar allows the home to rest naturally on its site. Chilton + Mayne Architecture collaborated with TRENZSEATER on the custom interior de- sign of this home. Black and white dominate the interior palette allowing textured finishes and feature wallpaper to pop out and add an element of fun. Like all Chilton + Mayne Architecture projects, seeing the home come from paper to real life was a great feeling for David and Garry. Chilton + Mayne Architecture has added its own flair to its Ashburton studio with a recent renovation.
