Unsurprisingly, these well-presented two-bedroom townhouses on Spencer St – priced for affordability - have already been snapped up and sold. Built by Gardiner Construction Ltd, the townhouses demonstrate the builders’ com- mitment to high standards of workmanship, providing an assurance of quality for the new homeowners. “It has been a six or seven month project for our team,” says Brett Gardiner, owner of Christchurch-based Gardiner Construction. “With the planting and courtyard work now finished, they’re looking really nice. All are low maintenance and that’s a real plus for first home buyers and investors. They are de- signed to be warm and energy efficient, with bedrooms and bathroom on the upper level and living and kitchen downstairs.” Brett and his brother purchased the site for development a couple of years ago, but it took some time to fine-tune a plan that met with city council approval. The narrow site – 9.5m wide and 60m long – presented some design challenges. “Everything was pretty awkward, including the recession planes that we had to work with. The architect – Stuart Manning [Stuart Manning Architects] did really well to design a solution that meant the site’s full potential could be realised.” Brett has a long track record in the Christchurch construction sector. He has been working in the local building industry since 2001. He completed his apprenticeship straight after leaving school and worked for another building company before launching Gardiner Construction in 2007. Over the past 14 years, Brett and his team have established a trusted reputation in home building and renovation. Working with him in the business is Brett’s wife Amy who manages administration and office requirements. Six builders form the skilled construction team, some of whom have been working with Brett for many years. Another project nearing completion for Gar- diner Construction is a small retirement devel- opment of three over-60s homes in Hoon Hay. With insulation about to be installed at the time of writing, these homes are well on the way to completion. “These are 100sqm standalone houses on an 800sqm section. The exterior cladding is on so they’re all watertight,” he says. “This is another example of how we look for sections and opportunities for small scale develop- ments.” Gardiner Construction has plenty of other work on the go in 2021, including new home builds in Christchurch’s hill suburbs and a number of extensions and renovations, (including repairs to fix earthquake damaged homes needing additional work). As well as completing their own develop- ments, the company also works alongside another developer as projects arise. In the COVID-19 environment, Brett says they are vigilant about scanning in and staying away from work if there is any sign of symp- toms. With supply chains for building materials having slowed considerably, Gardiner Con- struction is also putting a lot more energy into forward planning. No matter what the uncertainties, Brett says their clients can be sure of their unwavering commitment to the local region. “We’ve always been here for Canterbury.”
