Backing the campaign are local businesses like Taylored Building, a hardworking family business run by husband and wife team Carl and Tessa Taylor. Both are long-time resi- dents of Timaru, who are proud at how their supportive little town has stepped up. “As a result of last year’s lockdown, we had a lot of businesses putting their heads together and thinking about how to help each other out,” says Tessa. “A group formed on Facebook and it went from there.” Over recent months, she and Carl have noticed a real upsurge in people’s willingness to acknowledge others’ services and skills, through recommendations and referrals. “It’s great to see that ‘round robin’ at work with everybody looking out for each other.” Carl and Tessa have long sought out ways to help their community thrive, by working with local subcontractors as well as supporting social services providers (Family Works South Canterbury), and charities such as Street Cats South Canterbury that neuters/spays, social- ises and re-homes stray cats. Carl and Tessa’s children – Brooke, 10 and Mitchell, 6 – love to help care for kittens that Carl and Tessa take in as fosterers. Tessa serves on their local school’s Board of Trustees (Bluestone School) and is passionate about creating opportunity for children. Taylored Building supports and sponsors the Timaru Gymnastic Club and the South Canterbury Drama League. Local experience goes a long way in any business. Carl had 18 years in the building trade with his previous employer, before his boss retired to Twizel. This is what propelled Carl and Tessa into launching their own business in 2015. “At the time, we got all the advice we could from friends and family who had business experience. We took everything on board and now we’re often the ones giving others advice and assistance!” Providing marine maintenance services at the Port of Timaru – from the wharf and in dry dock - is a key focus for the business. The timing of arrivals at port can be fairly random, so Carl and Tessa have learned to be flexible and adaptable. “The workload can evolve quite quickly and you need to be ready for that. We can have three or four vessels coming in the same week, all needing maintenance and we’ve also got to help the other sub-trades too, from engineers and plumbers. We all have to work around each other.” Taylored Building often carries out main- tenance and repairs for various businesses in and around the port precinct. As well, they have built a couple of tiny houses in recent years and take on a small amount of other residential work, as time/scheduling allows. Tessa manages business administration, along with health and safety requirements. Having previously worked for building compa- nies, she has expertise with building products and design know-how. Working alongside Carl is a fellow experienced builder, plus another employee learning on the tools.
