Company founders Clayton and Elisa Cowan are acutely aware that the family home is generally the biggest asset that most New Zealanders will ever own. For most people, building a new home or planning a large ren- ovation is a huge emotional investment too that comes with its own inherent stresses. “Getting it right is just so important,” says Clayton, a skilled and highly experienced Licensed Building Practitioner. “Everyone wants their dream home but it can be quite a journey getting there, especially if it’s a big renovation and you’re still living in the home. We understand the pressures, and so really value connecting with our clients and making sure they are comfortable all the way, from early planning through to completion.” Covering Blenheim, Picton and the wider Marlborough region, Cowan Building is a small company with a strong local network that includes trusted tradespeople, architects, plumbers, engineers and suppliers. Working out of Blenheim, the company has a proud track record of delivering beautiful new homes and renovations. Gracious old homes can take time to reno- vate but Clayton says the effort is well worth it. As he observes, once these homes are demolished, the heritage goes with them and can never be replaced. “Personally, I get a lot of satisfaction out of renovations. The history of older homes is fas- cinating and it feels like a real privilege to be able to improve on something that’s already there and make it that much better.” Cowan Building has recently completed a large renovation of an architecturally-de- signed home in Blenheim. Built by the owner in 1970, the brief for the project was to modernise the home and adapt it to support extended family living. “We extended the dining room, kitchen, formal lounge, family lounge, added a big patio area and office and then re-clad the whole house so that everything would match. We also replaced the whole roof. The project grew as it went along – we were lucky that the owner saw the value in doing the work once and doing it right. “Previously, the house felt quite old and dark, but it’s now very light and modern. Add- ing the spacious patio has really opened it up. You can be in the kitchen cooking while talking to people in the patio area; it’s an ideal layout now for home entertaining.” Housing demand is running high in the region. Cowan Building currently has several new home builds underway, as well as other renovation projects. Clayton has considerable expertise in kitchen and bathroom renova- tions. Both he and Elisa, who takes care of com- pany administration, have excellent working relationships with specialist designers and suppliers and can help guide clients with options. “We like to work directly with people from the outset to learn what they require. So much of our work comes through word of mouth because people have had such a posi- tive experience with us in the past. “They know if you want the job done – and done right – then Cowan Building is the one to call.”
