102 | Communal living project Bronte House - Virginia Wool T T from page 100 Redbox Architects ARCHITECTURE “We’re most proud of this project as it’s a new approach to living in community. The houses are all duplexes with three single level buildings and the rest double storied to make more room for vegetable gardens and orchards. The backyards are mostly open and a communal kitchen and dining room and mezzanine living space encourages people to cook and entertain and be part of the community. We’re working closely with Signature Homes for this project, and we’ve developed three different 2-3 bedroom family homes for the neighbourhood. We work with individual home owners to incorporate their own ideas around their kitchens and bathrooms. It’s been a neat process,” enthuses Brad. “It’s really heartening that there are four co-housing projects shortlisted for this year’s New Zealand Architecture Awards, and that these projects are at a level that architects are proud to put them out there.” Also shortlisted for this year’s awards is Redbox Architecture’s Te Matāihi Rua house, a private oasis in a developed suburban neighbourhood overlooking the Waimea Inlet. This peaceful retreat is a successful downsizing for clients looking for a more manageable, easily maintained and accessible home on the peninsula. New building sites at the beach side town of Kaiteriteri has opened up a number of new projects for the team, mostly holiday homes and with a trend towards choosing sustainable products that require less maintenance over the life of the build. There is more use of thermally modified timber and aluminium cladding systems as opposed to cedar and painted weatherboards . A similar trend to sustainability is noticeable in the home alterations and renovations where clients are prepared to spend more upfront on sustainable products as they are thinking about what’s going to look good and require less maintenance in the future.
