| 103 T T Karen Phelps Award-winning home an oasis The Timaru home features double-height living areas, 140mm thick walls an air to water inslab heating system, a high level of thermal insulation, thermally broken aluminum, and Low E Max glazing. Chilton + Mayne Architecture Ltd: Gleniti Oasis ARCHITECTURE Leading architecture firm Chilton + Mayne Architecture Ltd has recently won the New Zealand New Home of the Year at the Trends magazine International Design Awards 2022 for a modern family home in Timaru that showcases how careful design and thoughtful material choices can create a private oasis while still embracing the surrounding environment. Named Gleniti Oasis, this family home was designed to meet the clients’ brief of a modern entertainer’s home that is suited to a social lifestyle, says firm director Garry Mayne. The home is situated within a residential area that boasts a rolling rural outlook, making it an ideal location for a family home, he adds. “One of the key requirements from the clients was for the home to sit comfortably on the site and have outdoor living spaces that connect with the views while being functional and usable year-round. “We delivered on this requirement by designing a central kitchen that acts as the heart of the home with access to the outdoor areas on both sides of the house,” he says. The double-height living area features a raking ceiling with high-level windows that capture both morning and evening sunlight, while overhangs help mitigate the full effect of the midday sun. The use of polished concrete floors and white walls reference the exterior environment while providing a setting for the clients’ ever-evolving art collection. Externally, the home creates a sense of arrival as you approach, revealing the full extent of the house. The understated material palette of plaster and locally sourced Timaru stone continues from the exterior to the interior and forms an immediate connection with the landscape. The home’s placement, set back from the road and a mixture of plantings to the street boundary, gives relief and greenery to the built neighbourhood for many years to come. Privacy was also a key consideration for the clients, and Chilton + Mayne Architecture delivered on this by designing the evening terrace around the outdoor wood-fired pizza oven, which is sheltered enough to feel cozy in the winter but open in the summer. Garry says that energy efficiency was addressed early within the design phase of the project, with a passive solar design approach of harnessing and managing the sun’s energy and energy storage in the thermal mass of the polished concrete floors. The home features 140mm thick walls, an air to water inslab heating system, a high level of thermal insulation, thermally broken aluminum, and Low E Max glazing, coupled with careful glazed opening placement, roof overhangs, and sun angles. Garry says Gleniti Oasis is a prime example of how considered architecture can deliver on the needs of a growing family within the confines of a sub-divided site. “Chilton + Mayne Architecture Ltd has once again showcased its commitment to providing tailored architectural solutions, delivering this project through a thoughtful and professional approach. “It’s a good example of our how our values of trust and respect see us collaborate successfully, creating long-lasting spaces for clients to enjoy.” Shore Construction are the proud builders of Gleniti Oasis, working alongside Chilton and Mayne Architecture from design through to completion and handover.
