The project saw the floor area increase by 1600m2 with all new chillers, freezers, offices and departmental areas. “In effect the supermarket has been rebuilt, all while remaining operational,” says ABL Quantity Surveyor/Project Manager Taylor Davies. “All new services have been installed throughout, including electrical, data, sprinklers, refrigeration and mechanical.” He says that the project utilised a range of building techniques and materials including T T to page 22 structural steel, precast concrete, insulated panel, metal windows, metal cladding, fibre cement sheet cladding and concrete. In the new floor construction alone slab on grade, rib and infill and ComFlor were used. Taylor says that working around an operating supermarket meant methodology and staging had to be carefully considered to keep everything functioning and ensure the on-going health and safety of all staff and customers. For example the butchery was moved completely off site and, once that stage was completed, moved back and the bakery moved off site so the next stage of works could commence. Areas were hoarded off with XLam fire rated panels, which were beneficial for noise reduction and temperature control. Crane and heavy machinery movements were managed to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions at all times. At peak 50-60 staff were on site. Taylor says that ABL’s prior experience working on numerous projects for Foodstuffs proved invaluable. It is also just finishing the “In effect the supermarket has been rebuilt, all while remaining operational. The challenging staged build was completed one month ahead of programme through thorough planning and efficient on and off site management. “What started as a dated 30-year-old supermarket, is now a vibrant light filled space with a new lease on life. It shows with the right planning and forward thinking any tricky project can be successfully completed on time and on budget.”
