The project was built in and around the former 140-year-old St Johns Anglican Church on Tay Street in Invercargill. The project saw the 140-year-old church seismically strengthened and a 1600qsm new steel framed building with precast and structural glazed elements constructed around the existing church. Taylor says the architectural flair of the new addition means “it’s far from your standard square box”. Designed by McCulloch Architects, a spacious natural light filled atrium is the heart of the building, featuring a floating steel central stair with full glass balustrades to all stairs, landings and walkways. The complex also contains six sound proof studios, DJ booths, editing rooms, group practise room and a green screen room as well as a café open to the public. The upper floors contain computer labs with all the latest technology. Exterior cladding is a mixture of tray cladding and Swisspearl and the North building has steep pitched roofs and skillion ceilings, which are in keeping with the existing church, says Taylor. He says that a confined site was just a small part of a build full of challenges and, like the Invercargill Pak’nSave project, methodology had to be well planned and carefully managed on and off site. ABL had its beginnings in 1961 and now boasts a team of over 150 staff. The company’s reputation is synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, a commitment to get the job done on time and a strong work ethic. ABL offers a full range of construction related services backed up by the resources of its significant supply chain. It can complete small projects such as maintenance contracts right through to building an entirely new town cenCONNECT WITH TOMORROW Proud to support Amalgamated Builders -Invercargill Data networks Electrical • Consultancy • Design • Installation • Service (03) 357 4477 info@tardis.nz www.tardis.nz A 224 Mersey Street, Invercargill P 03 214 1055 E enquiries@howleyjoinery.co.nz W www.howleyjoinery.co.nz Steep pitched roofs and skillion ceilings are in keeping with the existing church. tre as seen in the Invercargill Central project. ABL can come on board once a client is ready to start building work or it can get involved right from the vision of the project, fulfilling an advisor role in the process from the very beginning, or get deeply involved to take the client’s ideas from concept, through design, and to completion of the build. Taylor says there are a lot of projects happening in Southland at the moment with the Invercargill Central project giving people the confidence to invest in the region. At present ABL’s Invercargill team is completing a fitout for Pacific Radiology Group and a new museum storage and research facility for the Invercargill City Council.
