The New Zealand journey started in 1888, when the Milburn Lime and Cement Company was founded in the Dunedin region. In 1963, Milburn Lime and Cement Company merged with New Zealand Cement Holdings, which had commenced the manufacture of cement in Westport, few years earlier had commenced. In 1971 Holcim acquired 42% of New Zealand Cement Holdings, with the rest of ownership acquired in 1999. Around 2013, the very difficult decision was made to close the Westport cement manufacturing plant, and transition from a manufacturing model to an importer/supplier of cement. The decision was made to have two import terminals, one in Waitemata Auckland and the other based at PrimePort in Timaru. The Timaru terminal was opened in 2015 as a bulk supplier of cement, and the Westport plant closed in 2016. Currently, the cement is mainly imported from Japan, with a shipment of 30,000 tonnes arriving every ten days. Half the shipment stocks up the Auckland terminal with the balance going to Holcim’s Timaru terminal. Located right on the wharf at Timaru’s PrimePort the cement is stored in the highly recognisable big white dome, 33 metres high and just as wide, with a total capacity of 30,000 tonne of cement. A spokesman for Holcim (New Zealand) says the cement is supplied to Christchurch and Otago regional customers who make and supply concrete, “Between our cartage contractors and us we are currently doing about twenty-five truckloads a day going out to the regions. We also have an 8000tonne bulk coastal vessel that takes cement out to Dunedin, Lyttelton, Nelson, Wellington, Napier and New Plymouth to keep our Holcim depots there full.” Holcim New Zealand is committed to being a good neighbour in the communities in which it operates, and the Timaru team has a long-standing relationship with the local Cancer Society, volunteering manpower whenever possible. “We also support the local businesses both small and large, by using their services for our maintenance work, cleaning and repairs.” “We also support the local businesses both small and large, by using their services for our maintenance work, cleaning and repairs,” says the spokesperson. “Timaru is quite well set up as far as industrial support businesses go. There are fairly big companies that are geared up for engineering services, especially around maintaining ships, so we don’t often have to go outside of town to get what we want. “Building and maintaining relationships with those suppliers has been key. It becomes like a big family.” Holcim is a Swiss-based global building materials and aggregates flagship division of the Holcim Group. The original company was merged on 10 July 2015 with Lafarge to form LafargeHolcim as the new company and renamed to Holcim Group in 2021. The Lefarge/Holcim Group is the world’s leading cement manufacturing and distribution company, with 71,000 employees across the globe. As a global leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions, Holcim is enabling greener cities, smarter infrastructure and improving living standards around the world. With sustainability at the core of its strategy Holcim is becoming a net zero company with its people and communities at the heart of its success.
