The expansion to Bidwill Trust Hospital includes a new Pacific Radiology Timaru branch providing a comprehensive range of on-site radiology services and specialist expertise to complement the hospital’s existing surgical and clinical services. The expansion encompasses 600sqm of which 90sqm is being used for the hospital’s own purposes while the larger proportion is leased to Pacific Radiology. “It means there is now an increased level of world class services available locally for our community. Quicker and easier access to treatment results in better health outcomes,” says General Manager of Bidwill Hospital Tina Rogers. Bidwill Trust Hospital is the only private surgical hospital in the South Canterbury region and offers an extensive range of services, including general surgery, orthopaedic, ear/ nose/throat, gynaecology, endoscopy, and ophthalmology. The hospital has 15 inpatient beds, a 14-bed day surgery unit and three fully equipped operating theatres. The expansion project came about as there were no radiology services on the site, and Pacific Radiology approached Bidwill Trust Hospital as they were looking to expand their existing services within the South Canterbury region. Tina says the addition of radiology services not only provided an opportunity to broaden the suite of offerings that are available on the site but also permitted an increase to the hospital’s storage capacity and its sterilizing area to meet the ongoing increase in patient numbers. Christchurch practice Totem Studio Architects designed the Bidwill Trust Hospital expansion while local engineers Milward Finlay Lobb provided structural engineering services for the project and Powell Fenwick was engaged for mechanical/hydraulics/electrical/fire engineering services. Timaru Construction Ltd led the build of the expansion. Pacific Radiology was a key partner in the design of the facility throughout the project, with initial discussions commencing early in 2020 and Tina says the communication and cooperative nature with Paci c Radiology has been a signi cant contributing factor to the success of the project, and achieving better health outcomes for South Canterbury community. Pacific Radiology Timaru delivers a range of advanced imaging and diagnostic services including CT, MRI, breast imaging, all forms of ultrasound, and an X-ray walk-in service, conveniently located under the one roof. “We are incredibly proud to be a part of such an amazing partnership and collaboration, not only between ourselves, but also with the clinicians and patients, to provide the best possible care,” says Pacific Radiology Timaru branch manager Rebecca Wedlake. “We appreciate the support and trust that our local community has placed in us, and look forward to continuing to support the growing healthcare needs of our region. ” Bidwill Trust Hospital is owned by a charitable trust and Tina says that over the years the board had been very forward thinking, purchasing neighbouring properties to enable future expansion as opportunities arose. Bidwill Trust Hospital’s roots go back to 1912. Another hospital was built on the site in 1936, and the current hospital was built in 2001. Now a modern, purpose-built surgical hospital with facilities that are comparable with the best in New Zealand, the hospital’s expansion means the suite of radiology services offered will provide a valuable extra capacity to the region, says Tina, complementing the services currently available through Te Whatu Ora South Canterbury. “Our patients come from all over Mid/South Canterbury and North Otago areas and even down into Central Otago,” says Tina. “The absence of these facilities has meant that South Canterbury people have had to travel to Christchurch or Dunedin, which is often not convenient, particularly when people are unwell. The new bigger brighter facility and expanded scope has been very popular, especially as demand for MRI has grown substantially in the region.”
