Last year MBL won the National Supreme House of the Year award with an opulent family home in Fendalton. It was a stunning repeat performance for MBL, as their last entry in 2018 also scooped the top national supreme house award. Mark and Ali Metzger, alongside business partner Rick Leftly, have secured an enviable reputation in Canterbury by going above and beyond for clients and producing homes that set a benchmark for excellence. With a highly skilled team of staff and subcontractors, MBL has won multiple awards and is a sought-after builder in Canterbury’s high end home build market. From 2019, Mark also served as a House of the Year judge for three years running. At 924sqm, last year’s national supreme award winner is the biggest home that MBL has ever built. In scale, Mark says it is more akin to a commercial build. “For example, it has fifty tonnes of structural steel, more than any other house in Christchurch. The steel went in first and was then filled in with glass and timber which is opposite to how you would normally build a residential home. We split the gib stopping and painting into three manageable stages. Our team really enjoy the challenge of largescale, high spec projects. We have built 700 square metre homes in the past and are currently working on some that are even bigger than that as well.” O’Neil + Architecture delivered the streamlined design of this supreme six-bedroom, six-bathroom home that sits beautifully on a park-like site, bounded by Fendalton’s Wairarapa Stream. The exterior is dark and contemporary with low-slung rooflines and large cantilevered overhangs. Even though the footprint is breath-taking, the sleek, cleanlined dwelling is well-balanced and in scale with its surroundings. Behind the brass front door is a luxurious interior, finished to an impeccable standard in a timeless and classic style. The material palette is predominantly timber, glass, brass, stone and granite. “As the judges observed, big is not always best but in this case it was. It’s a very large house yet it is to scale; it is really elegant and so liveable. Internally it is luxurious but the rooms are not too big – it feels warm and inviting.”
