Colin O’Neill has clocked up around 50 years in the building industry including operating his own company Colin O’Neill Builders for 40 years. James Davidson served his apprenticeship with Colin and wanted to take the next step in his career, which led the pair to set up Plains Construction in December 2021 in joint ownership. Based in Rangiora, Plains Construction builds Canterbury wide and further afield when required by its customers. Colin says a real point of difference is the company’s focus on personal service with either Colin or James – often both – being available to clients whenever they have questions. “We aim to build each home to a high quality,” says Colin. “We are always on hand for our clients to ask us questions.” Plains Construction is a proud member of Registered Master Builders and in the past Colin’s previous company won an award at the House of the Year competition for a commercial refurbishment project demonstrating the high levels of skill and attention to detail he always strives for. Plains Construction completes residential and commercial projects including repairs and maintenance as well as new builds. It will undertake both small and large projects. A recent snapshot of projects demonstrates the company’s diversity. It has just completed a job at Motunau Beach, which saw Plains Construction offer a comprehensive solution to the client from demolishing an original home on the site to building a retaining wall to building the home to soft landscaping, driveways and paths. Colin says this is possible due to a reliable and trusted group of high quality subcontractors. Plains Construction was involved in the project from the outset working alongside Laser Design. “We can always add expertise at the design stage if required and prefer to do this as it results in a better outcome for the client if the architect and builder work together,” says James. Plains Construction has just completed the earthquake strengthening and additional works to bring a commercial building up to code, along with an interior fit-out for a panel-beating firm. At present Plains Construction is working on a house alteration project in Papanui including a new kitchen, laundry and dining area plus hard landscaping and a high end new two story home in Merivale. The project has involved ground remediation and Colin says the design of the 330sqm home by Case Ornsby Architecture is complex involving curved walls and structural steel work. Colin and James say the reputation of Plains Construction relies on its talented team, which includes staff who have 35-40 years building experience. They are also keen to take on apprentices and bring new blood into the company. “They will be the future of the company and at Plains Construction we train people to build buildings rather than just assemble them. It’s about traditional tried and true construction skills that result in great houses and buildings.”
