A notable advantage of Tira’s spiral-welding technology is that it enables tanks to be built on-site in places that would otherwise be inaccessible for traditional fabricated tank delivery. “If you can get a container to your site, we can build a tank there,” Clint says. “We recently did a project up a goat-track in Havelock – a place where it would have been impossible to get a big crane in. “We simply unloaded our equipment and built the tank in-situ on site. “There were no access issues, and it was a very efficient build process.” New Zealand clients patronising the technology include councils and civil engineering companies with a wide variety of sizes and capacities. “We can go up to three million litres, which is very large in comparison to standard dairy factory silos which hold around 250,000 litres.” Clint cites Tira’s values as caring for people and place, working with integrity, being courageous in leading with innovation and seeking out excellence. The Tira story goes all the way back to 1894 when it was founded in Hawera making small tanks, and also running a store selling the likes of gumboots and other farm necessities. The company has made sustainability a major priority, and this resulted in its achieving Gold Certification with the Sustainable Steel Foundation last year. An independent audit found Tira proactive in a range of fields from waste reduction and environmental impacts to employees’ health, well-being and diversity. “We operate a number of waste management and control programmes and, as a result, we have very low wastage – and anything that we are not able to use gets recycled,” Clint says. Tira caters to regional markets through its six well-equipped workshops. “Our clients come to us with their specifications, and we then work with them to find the best solution. “We deliver a full service from design and build to installation or refurbishment, and cover a wide range of projects from small to large scale. “A lot of our customers come back to us time and again as their needs change and they require modifications to their facilities,” Clint says. Further innovations ensure the company will survive the present strained economic challenges.
