CONTRACTING Richmond Glass T T Karen Phelps Richmond Glass was recently announced as a finalist for the Site Safe 2023 Construction Health, Safety, and Wellbeing Safety in Leadership award. The award is granted to a site or company that has implemented an initiative involving organizational leaders who actively engage in health and safety activities, driving safety performance through visible participation. The team at Richmond Glass operates across three locations in Nelson, Greymouth and Queenstown and company general manager Ben Homan says that travel is a significant challenge due to the vast distances between these locations with the team facing issues such as near misses or poor choices due to fatigue. “What we were finding was that those team members that were driving distances were having near misses, were not stopping, having stock damage and would overly fatigue themselves in the pursuit of getting to a destination. Driving was often solo or in pairs so was difficult to manage,” he explains. Something had to change so Richmond Glass created was a ‘Day Allowance’ per day trip of no longer than two hours of travel time for every team member whether they were the driver or not. “This was not just a financial benefit to the team but was sold as an allowance so they could stop at, for example, a café, petrol station or dairy, and have a break and a refuel of drink and coffee. It was an extended micro break for drivers.” Ben says that as soon as it was implemented team incidents reduced, banter came around the team of the best places to stop at, stamp cards were shared, energy was raised and fatigue lowered. Importantly, this then impacted on smarter choices from the team on sites and in travel. “Yes, there is cost to the business to undertake this initiative but the reduced incidents meant a net gain to the business. Not one insurance claim has been filed in the last six months. It’s proof that a small difference can create a large result,” says Ben. “The fact we received a special mention at the award ceremony was further icing on the cake of this great initiative.” Richmond Glass, located in Nelson, is a reputable local specialist in all things glass-related. The company offers a comprehensive range of expert glass services including retrofitting double glazing on existing windows - an excellent solution for reducing internal moisture levels, improving heating and cooling efficiencies, and regulating internal room temperatures, says Ben.
