Leroy Cunningham reflects on the past six years of ownership of Steadfast Joinery with great pride and satisfaction. His retrospection comes as he and his family look forward to some well-deserved quality time following the sale of the business late March. Married to Emmy, Leroy started the Dunedin joinery business in 2017 with an emphasis on bespoke projects and design flair. Leroy says he did not start the business with great personal expectations other than to be able to be his own boss, have flexible working hours and to produce high quality work. “We’ve just grown from strength to strength, we never really hit that plateau. It wasn’t planned growth; it was just the fact that we were following the demand.” As the business grew, its branding towards higher quality work attracted niche projects “that really seemed to appeal to people”. Leroy says. “We tried not to be too expensive for what we are creating, but it was more that design flair we had from the start that separated us out.” This strategy obviously worked; last December Steadfast Joinery was nominated as a finalist in the inaugural 2023 Home New Zealand Home Interior Design Excellence Awards for its entry dubbed ‘The Sanctuary’ that Leroy describes as a showstopper. He credits the brief of the client and Steadfast Joinery designer Alison Chisman’s vision and design to the result that created a kitchen that is striking, functional and, with the inclusion of half round pine rods on the faces of the cabinetry, particularly unique.
