| 101 Aflex Homes BUILDING Production efficiencies with Aflex Aflex Homes are built quickly off site and transported to site. T T Kelly Deeks Aflex Homes has spent years developing and perfecting the home planning and construction process to make sure it can deliver high quality building projects, exceptional customer service, and affordable prices to satisfied customers throughout the South Island. Aflex Homes is a small and tight knit family owned and operated business constructing transportable, prefabricated, and kitset homes of all sizes, sleepouts, and offices at its build site in Westport. With more than 18 years of construction carpentry experience, owner Hamish Grant has been self employed since the age of 19 and started Aflex Homes in 2010, before transportables became really popular in New Zealand and before there were a lot more in the marketplace. “We got set up before transportables were popular and we are lucky to get the market where it is now,” he says. “When we first started it was quite shocking for people to see a whole house being transported on the road, but now everyone is getting used to seeing a house transported out of Westport every week.” Hamish loves the efficiencies Aflex Homes can gain by constructing off site. Tools, equipment, and materials are all set up and ready to go every morning, and Aflex Homes’ team of subcontractors enjoy being at the yard. This consistent team is always gaining production efficiencies along with experience. “Our house builds are getting quicker and quicker,” Hamish says. “We’ve got two in the yard at the moment on day 15 and they’re putting the cladding on. It’s just incredible to have a house to cladding stage in just over two weeks. That’s about 60% or 70% of the build complete.” Building consents for transportable homes will also reduce project timelines as they can be issued by council in about three to four weeks. “On site consents can take a lot longer and the advantage of building a house in the yard while we wait on on-site consents benefits the clients greatly, as the house can be completed and ready for transport by the time they are waiting on piles to be installed. One to two weeks later they can be living in it.” Aflex Homes has perfected its process over the years with some materials changes that have improved both quality and speed. A recent change to the Weathertex range of timber claddings brings more consistent quality, zero carbon foot print , and no added nasty chemicals. Aflex Homes continues to evolve with the marketplace and new designs are always tested by Hamish and his partner Debra and their children, as this family is always living in an Aflex Home. “We are currently building a big modular design and we’re testing it to see how we go with the size, and how well it’s going to transport, before we add it to our range.” With its motto of ‘customisable transportable homes made easy’, Aflex Homes is excited to be with every clients through every step of its transparent and uncomplicated building process.
