BUILDING Waikouaiti rugby mates, Nick Terry and Tame Cook, brought their complementary skill sets together in 2020 to form Custom Construction, a rural and residential building business that has continued to evolve and grow throughout the East Otago region. Nick also owns and operates Custom Fencing, and after a footie game he asked Tame, an experienced and qualified builder, how work was going. “He told me that things were a bit quiet. At that stage I had paling fences coming out my ears and invited him to give me a hand, which he did, and with his carpentry skills we ended up doing bathroom renovations.” With projects that were increasing in volume and scale, Nick and Tame decided the time was right to merge their business and building skills sets, and formed Custom Construction in November 2020, with Tame a co-director and fronting the business. “The business actually grew faster than we expected it to,” says Nick. “We’re semi-rurally based and our work had evolved into home renovations, farm pole sheds and new home builds. After we completed our first new build, people could see that we delivered a very good product.” The size of the team has also progressively grown and in addition to Tame, there are now four qualified builders and two apprentices. “Eighty percent of our work is local to East Otago, which covers Waikouaiti, Palmerston, and it would not be unusual for us to travel to Dunedin to do a job. “Currently we have three houses in progress in Palmerston, one in Waikouaiti itself, as well as all the smaller jobs we do. We’re still building rural pole sheds, doing renovation work and building decks. Our core customers are the East Otago residential and rural sectors with some commercial work.” Nick and Tame have developed a close working relationship with Ben Robson from Bay View Design in Dunedin, and typically put his name forward to a client for a home design. “We do a wide range of homes in terms of size, and style. You give us a sketch of whatever you would like, and eighteen months later we will give you the keys. Normally a client comes to us with an idea or sketch and we will visit the site and provide guidance on positioning to capture the sun and views, before getting a plan drawn up and providing a price. We’re setting up membership with Certified Plans, which clients will be able to access, but usually we find clients customise those plans to suit their own needs and lifestyle.” Looking back over the last three years, Nick says Custom Construction has enjoyed success because clients are treated the way he and Nick would want to be treated, delivering a product they are happy with. “Being in a rural community, word-of-mouth is massive for us. You also need a good team of guys to make it happen, and we’re very fortunate in that regard. We’re also members of New Zealand Certified Builders Association, so that does provide our clients with a high level of comfort.” PLACEMAKERS DUNEDIN & MOSGIEL PLACEMAKERSDUNEDIN & MOSGIEL 50 BURNS ST & 34 CARNCROSS ST (03) 466 4617 PROUDLY SUPPORTING • Soil Bearing Capacity • NDM/Compaction Testing • CBR/Impact testing Dean Linklater | 027 699 2277 | dean.linklater@outlook.com Servicing South Canterbury, Mackenzie, North & East Otago Regions.
