104 | BUILDING Alpine Ridge Construction Carving out a niche in Waimak Waimakariri-based building firm Alpine Ridge Construction has carved out a niche in the sector that has allowed them to grow and expand their operation. The company, founded by Paul Hussey, has built a name for itself in the region over its seven years in business, with a particular expertise in decking. It has also developed a strong relationship with construction firm Home NZ, which builds unit complexes for Kainga Ora. “I have taken on three apprentices, two that have just become qualified - one qualified builder and two contractors, and have been very fortunate that they are all nice guys that are passionate at what they do,” Paul said. Currently they are building seven units in Kaiapoi and finishing off three units in Redwood. Paul spent a couple of years trying to find a niche in the market, and found he enjoyed decking work. “So, I started targeting decking jobs more and more, and got a lot more efficient with it.” After some thought, he decided three years ago to start a sister company called Mainland Decking Ltd., which made it easier to target the decking market and provided a good work stream for Alpine Ridge Construction. It added to the team’s wide range of services, he said. “We design and build top quality decking, build new houses and units, renovate older houses, and build farm sheds. “We focus on quality customer satisfaction and being easy to deal with. All our staff enjoy what they do and are friendly, efficient, and have an eye for detail.” The company seemed to have weathered the recent downturn in the industry well. “We did get quiet in the middle of last year and it was a struggle for a while, but work picked up in October last year and we have been comfortable for work since then.” Paul had always wanted to run his own building company and has a passion for seeing projects transform and become a masterpiece. “In 2016 my boss at the time was struggling to find enough work for all us guys so I thought it was a good time to find more of my own work and then by the end of the year made the jump to starting my own business.” At the time he was building houses in Castle Hill and Hamner Springs, “and with my love for hunting and the outdoors I chose the name Alpine Ridge Construction Ltd”. Now married with a three-year-old boy, he targets work closer to Waimakariri and Christchurch areas to be close to home. Alpine Ridge Construction has carved out a niche that has allowed them to grow and expand their operation. T T Rosa Watson He said the construction industry was always changing. “We are now moving into more medium density housing complexes, with many different tradespeople on one site at one time.” He said the industry was improving the way it built houses, with new designs, more insulation, ventilation, and was moving away from the single-builder model of construction. He expected to see more subdivisions pipping up in the region in the coming years. “I have heard that Christchurch City doesn’t want to focus on new subdivisions, so I see that a lot more subdivisions and medium density housing will be coming to the Waimakariri district.” As a result, this would put more pressure on the roading, water, power infrastructure. “And I guess its managing that well as we continue to expand over the next five years.” KAIAPOI KAIAPOI'S LOCAL BUILDING SUPPLY STORE Right products, right advice.
