110 | The Hawthorndale Care Village T T Russell Fredric All on track Hawthorndale village LIFESTYLE Hawthorndale Care Village, Invercargill’s newest elder care facility, is rapidly taking shape after 10 years of dreaming and planning. The $36 million development was born out the recognition about a decade ago of the need to replace the existing Calvary Hospital and Rest Home, which has the same board of trustees as those behind Hawthorndale Care Village. Hawthorndale Care Village project manager Helen Robinson says construction began above ground last August and is progressing very well. “Everything is pretty much on track, we are probably about half way through the whole project now. In one year’s time we will be handed over the buildings. We are starting to work through the final year which is obviously really exciting. It’s been 10 years in the making.” The facility will include providing dementia care based on the Dutch Hogeweyk model which aims to humanise dementia care by recreating the familiarity of everyday life within a safe and secure setting. When completed, the village will have 86 care beds across 13 houses, plus 26 independent living villas nestled in an authentic village setting, surrounded by landscaped gardens and streets. Each care house will accommodate six to seven residents. Hawthorndale Care Village aims to create a friendly suburban neighbourhood, and a special feature will be a central plaza with a dairy, café, theatre, hairdressing salon, wellness centre, a chapel and an art room, plus there will also be a blokes shed on site. Unusually, construction is being undertaken by three separate key contractors under three individual contracts. The villas are being built by Bennett Homes and the administration area and village plaza by Henderson Construction, while Amalgamated Builders are building the care homes. Helen credits the excellent progress to having the three firms each working to their strengths; additionally it has been estimated T T to page 112 these efficiencies have saved about $1 million. “They are all doing what they know and what they do best. They use all their own subcontractors and have their own teams and that’s been hugely beneficial, and we’ve still managed to keep 98% of the contractors Southland-based.” “I think all three contractors and their subcontractors have all really taken the project to heart. They understand that it’s a project led by a not-for-profit organisation, and we are obviously building a facility that will hopefully benefit hundreds, if not thousands of Southlanders in the coming years.” There has been a strong community drive to see the facility realised with “huge support” from far and wide. “Certainly locally in Southland it’s been amazing. The donations have come in, the support that we’ve got from different businesses and in-kind services has been great.” “They are all doing what they know and what they do best. They use all their own subcontractors and have their own teams and that’s been hugely beneficial, and we’ve still managed to keep 98% of the contractors Southland-based.” Proud to be Project Managers for the new Hawthorndale Care Village. www.lewisbradford.com Lewis Bradford is proud to be providing the structural engineering expertise for this exciting development.
