Active Refrigeration, a prominent nationwide refrigeration and air conditioning company, is taking strides in propelling New Zealand businesses towards greener futures by transitioning them from fossil fuel dependency tomore energy-e icient and sustainable heating and cooling technologies. Established in 2000 by founding families Craig and Karen Du , along with Graeme and Sherryn Green, the company has grown from a ledgling refrigeration entity into a nationwide powerhouse specialising in sustainable industrial and commercial refrigeration and heating system solutions. With a workforce of approximately 230 people and its headquarters situated in Christchurch, Active Refrigeration boasts expertise in designing, supplying, and servicing cutting-edge systems and technologies aimed at helping industries slash their carbon footprint while enhancing energy e iciencies. Craig Du , a founding director of Active Refrigeration, emphasises the company's unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation, which has yielded signi icant bene its for primary industries nationwide. "Our technologies are setting the benchmark for energy e iciencies across various sectors within New Zealand industry and commerce," Craig says, underscoring the company's pivotal role in spearheading the decarbonisation movement among large primary producers. “We’ve become a cornerstone of the move toward decarbonisation amongst large primary producers, partnering with the industry and global manufacturers to help business meet their sustainability goals.” Innovation and sustainability The shift towards energy-e icient production equipment is deemed essential for New Zealand tomaintain its global export partnerships, and early indications and industry feedback suggest resounding success in terms of reducing carbon emissions and overall energy consumption. In recent collaborations with Deta Consulting, Active Refrigeration has undertaken signi icant large-scale conversions for major players in New Zealand's meat processing sector, including Alliance Group, Silver Fern Farms, and Anzco. Using high-temperature ammonia heat pump technologies, these conversions involve capturing wasted heat streams from refrigerant systems and repurposing them to produce hot water within the processing plants, thus maximising energy e iciency. “This means we can generate from ambient, reliable energy streams out of process which would otherwise go to waste and use that to generate higher energy streams to produce high temperature hot water,” says Craig. “Heat recovery can be used anywhere that requires high temperature heating. You don’t need to have refrigeration on site for this to work.” Committed to delivering top-tier sustainable solutions, Active Refrigeration o ers end-to-end services encompassing analysis, feasibility assessments, system engineering, installation, maintenance, and full project management. As New Zealand steers towards a decarbonised future, Active Refrigeration remains dedicated to keeping the nation's industries both relevant and environmentally responsible.
