Entering Category D: Projects over $5million, Managing Director Stephan Rattray says BGCL does not enter the CCNZ awards every year, and is always frugal in terms of the projects it does submits. “It has to be something that’s out of the box. We’re pretty small fry compared to the big tier one companies, so it’s pretty unusual for a company our size to even get into Category D, let alone achieve Highly Commended. “The fact that in a little over a year we produced 481 Lots was a wonderful achievement, particularly with such a small resource. We demonstrated that not only could we do a subdivision, but we could do it quickly and efficiently. And I think that’s what the judges pulled out of our achievement. “Our programme is what we live and die by, and we don’t make excuses for not getting things done.” Over the last thirty years BG Contracting has established a successful working relationship with Hughes Developments on its residential subdivisions. When Jake Hughes showed Stephan plans for the 481 Lot development and said it needed to happen as fast as possible, BGCL were presented with a rare opportunity for continuity of work. “We optimised the resource we had, figured out what extra resource we needed and streamlined the programme to deliver the Lots at the rate of 1.48 per day. We commenced the project on the 24th of June of 2021, following three months of delays before we could commence. By the time we got the green light we were like a coiled spring. We were three weeks into Stage One when we got hit by the July Covid lockdown for six weeks.” Split into seven stages spread over 54 hectares, the project was completed in October 2022, and included earthworks, sanitary sewer, stormwater drainage, water reticulation, pump station, roading and footpaths, underground services and landscaping. Stephan says challenges included managing supply issues throughout the project. “Because we were going so fast, all the supply chains had to be organised well in advance. “We had some special favours awarded to us by our supplier Hynds, who continuously had three months’ worth of product on site for us, which the client was happy to pay for once we got it on site. The client recognised the effort that was going on from a coordination point of view.” Congratulations BG Contracting on your recent success at the 2023 Canterbury CCNZ Awards for your works in the Farrington Westwood Subdivision. We appreciate the willingness of BG Contracting, to respond to the needs of clients, the health and safety needs of teams and the needs of the community - day in, day out. We look forward to continue working alongside BG Contracting on other developments as a valued subcontractor. www.fultonhogan.com
