BGCL’s job was to ensure all the speed humps were removed, and the team was able to flow from one stage to the next. “We run a specialist crew model. The drainage guys do the drainage, the roading guys do the roading, and they were just flowing from one stage to the next without any delay. “They love what they do, so why stop them. This project had been cut up into nice little chunks that allowed us to progress very quickly. “We had thirty to forty team members on site at any one time, depending on where we were at with the project and they were led by just three or four people who were managing individual stages with oversight from our Project Manager Ewen Peat and myself.” Last year, BGCL celebrated forty years in business. Based in Rangiora, the specialist subdivision contractor operates throughout the Canterbury region and Kaikoura. Reflecting on the company’s success, Stephan says if he asks any consultant who works with BGCL’s what the point of difference was, they would all say programme. “We run an optimised programme, where the earthworks team has two days head start before the drainage team starts. “You create this momentum on a project which motivates the teams. “They’re all excited that things are getting started and finished really quickly, and it makes the programme so much shorter. We will run four or five critical paths within the same project.
