Arc Projects CONTRACTING Arc Projects, a leading civil engineering contracting company based in Christchurch, has clinched the Underground Services Award at the 2023 Civil Contractors New Zealand Awards in recognition of their specialist pump station capabilities. This achievement highlights Arc Projects’ exceptional expertise and specialised capabilities in pump station construction, consistently delivering high quality solutions. The award celebrates their exemplary performance across four pivotal pump station projects. From the Otaki Street stormwater pump station in Kaiapoi, dedicated to mitigating flood risks, to the deployment of three pump stations across Blenheim as part of a crucial sewer upgrade scheme, Arc Projects has consistently surpassed expectations. CCNZ award judges commended Arc Projects for their proactive planning and meticulous risk mitigation strategies, in the face of challenging foundation conditions and intricate piping and pumping equipment. The 2023 CCNZ award is the second of its kind for the company, having won the same award in 2017 for a stormwater pumping station they designed, supplied and installed for the Christchurch City Council, off Anzac Drive. “We won a national civil construction award the same year, so it’s nice to be recognised,” says Arc Projects director Ant Rickard. With a background in civil engineering and extensive project management experience across the South Island, Ant Rickards established Arc Projects in 2012. “Last year’s award was around our contract with Waimakariri District Council to construct a new stormwater pump station as part of their larger stormwater and flooding improvements programme.” Replacing an aging gravity fed system which struggled to discharge during high tides, the significant work required meticulous planning to install three Flygt pumps in a large insitu concrete pump chamber. “Now it’s capable of pumping 1000 litres a second, so it’s a dramatic improvement,” says Ant. Another vital and significant civil works project awarded is the Blenhiem sewer upgrade that Arc Projects was a specialist subcontractor on, to main contractor Shick Civil Construction. This required the installation of four new pump stations throughout Blenhiem. The first of which is a retrofit station at Budge St, while McLauchlan St is a replacement station to an existing one at the same site and Bomford St is a new wastewater and stormwater pumpstation plus bypass treatment plant. “Each of these projects presented its own distinct site challenges,” says Ant, including building foundations over seven metres underground and navigating complex pipework - all challenges overcome by Arc Projects’ collective expertise. From collaborating with central and local government authorities to catering to the needs of private developers, Arc Projects have proven ability to execute technical civil works projects with precision and efficiency. “We’ve completed wastewater pump stations for Ravenswood subdivisions, and Strowan Fields, Ashburton, Flemington and Rosemerryn housing development in Lincoln,” says Ant. Working alongside Ant is supervisor Tony Green, project engineer Tom Harding and site engineer Adam Green who together, co-ordinate a 12-member team of trained and experienced staff.
