| 41 T T Russell Fredric Civil works firm ‘pushing for growth’ Balclutha based Rutter Civil is gearing up for projected growth in the local civil works sector. Rutter Civil CONTRACTING After being launched just two years ago, Balclutha-based company Rutter Civil Limited (RCL) is gaining good ground in the civil works sector. Owned and operated by George Rutter who created the company in July 2021 aged just 22, George believes that youth and enthusiasm combined with a good work ethic is part of the success of providing a practical cost-effective solution to all his clients’ work requirements. He says he is also fortunate to have an experienced group of conscientious staff that are keen to upskill in all aspects of civil works and construction. George brings a depth of experience from previously working for Clutha District Council as a project engineer, having completed an engineering cadetship with the council and gaining a Diploma in Engineering (Civil). He started RCL after seeing a market gap for minor civil works with lower capital expenditure that is typically undertaken by larger firms, and believes his professional qualification and civil works sector experience sets the business apart locally. “I’ve worked on a range of projects at the council which range from $50,000 to $3,500,000, so it gave me a good insight into project management and some of the financial side of it as well and dealing with stakeholders and third parties.” Last year had been good for both establishing and further developing the company, George says. “We took on some really good staff, we made some really good partnerships with some local companies. We are putting some capital into some machinery and really developing the business and pushing for growth.” Much of its work to date has centred on delivering capital water treatment plant projects and storage capacity upgrades which is George’s area of specialisation, but RCL has the ability and capacity to handle a wide variety of work. Its equipment includes 1.7, 6 and 15 tonne excavators, with the latter two having in-cab GPS, plus a 7.5 tonne tip truck and a 10 tonne six-wheeler tip truck. RCL is committed to investing in GPS technology that creates considerable efficiencies and a high quality result through the ability to operate to fine tolerances over large geographic areas. George cites the example of a pump station contract RCL is currently working on as a subcontractor where there has been a significant time saving due to the use of GPS. “The excavator operator always knows his heights, he’s got the [in cab] reference, we’re not using additional labour units or lasers or dumpy levels.” The pump station project, near Milburn south of Dunedin for Clutha District Council is being undertaken as a subcontractor to Cowley Electrical, Dairy & Pumps Balclutha. The pump station will connect the existing Milton water treatment plant to the township of Waihola, while existing pumps in the Milton water treatment plant are being upgraded. “We have a really good relationship with Cowley’s and have worked with them a lot since we started.” RCL’s part of the contract includes bulk earthworks and site preparation. “The big thing we look after is all the water reticulation connections and the reservoir construction as well as all the earth works and hard stand areas.” As the business grows, George is matching this with significant capital investment, including establishing a new yard with a five bay equipment shed and office, expected to be completed late April this year.
