Balcrom CONTRACTING Based in Cromwell, Balcrom provides the highest level of quality and expertise for engineered concrete products comprising precast and prestressed construction components. General manager Stacey Hansen says Balcrom supplies predominantly to the commercial, residential and rural sectors and its plant has been audited under the Concrete New Zealand plant certification program. This gives confidence to project specifiers, head contractors, building owners and architects by ensuring Balcrom has appropriate manufacturing facilities, quality assurance programs and high levels of expertise and experience. Balcrom has also been assessed by Telarc and is certified as conforming to ISO standards relating to quality management, health and safety and environmental management. “We are the only precast concrete manufacturer in Otago to meet these ISO standards,” Stacey says. “It’s a big point of difference for us. It means that we have processes in place where our clients know they are going to get a quality product that conforms with the relevant New Zealand standards.” Balcrom previously had another manufacturing plant at Balclutha, but to create efficiencies and maximise competitiveness, it has consolidated its operations to be operating solely from Cromwell. This plant has been expanded to meet demand in the southern South Island, and especially in the buoyant Central Otago construction market. The company currently employs 22 staff. Balcrom’s product range includes precast panels, rib and infill flooring systems, flat slabs, stairs and landings, Thermomass insulated prefabricated concrete panels, and double-tee components which are ideally suited to carparks and supermarkets where large, column-free spaces are required. Projects the company has been involved in include the Kaans Catering Supplies redevelopment in Dunedin, the Highland Park development in Cromwell, the Sudima Hotel at Frankton and the new state-of-the-art Ōtepoti ACC Dunedin building which will provide 8000 square metres of office space over four stories. Balcrom’s contract for the ACC building was to supply more than 7000 lineal meters of concrete rib and infill flooring elements that incorporates prestressed concrete ribs, permanent formwork and an in-situ concrete topping. “It went very well, it was a significant, high profile project for Balcrom to be involved in. We just delivered the ribs for the last floor this month [February].” This project followed the construction of the Sudima Hotel, another high profile four story building, led by Naylor Love. Balcrom supplied precast panels, rib and infill flooring and precast stairs for this project. In addition to manufacturing for commercial projects, Balcrom also supplies precast panels for residential applications such as architecturally designed houses, and apartments which is an extremely efficient way to build, as well as having the option of being an architectural feature, Stacey says. “Using precast panels reduces onsite construction time, and the panels are constructed in a controlled environment.
